apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Black Swan - Natalie close up)
This is the "Who I Am" meme, snagged from [livejournal.com profile] isisanubis, whom I have yet to properly say hello to. (HELLO!)

You save and post pics from the andthatswhoiam Tumblr that describe you. I skipped all the fandom-specific ones (well, mostly) and the TMI deep shit confessions (again...mostly!) The Tumblr is very focused on the feels of teenagerhood, and thus is likely to trigger a lot of self-conscious nostalgia. There were lots of "that's who I am" pics I wanted to find (I love science, I am confident, I am queer, I make stuff, I'm always on time, I do my best to avoid saying negative things about myself, I want other people to love me but not as much as I want them to respect me, etc.) and maybe I'll get around to making those some day.

In the meantime: a completely self-indulgent pictorial representation of various aspects of the person I call 'me'. )

I have an insatiable lust for memes tonight, so I made one of my own. It works thusly:

Type each letter of alphabet into the address bar of your main browser, and note which site pops up first. Leave off the naughty ones if you must, but give us a little hint as to what it was!

A Archive of Our Own
B BBC
C [website redacted] Not for naughty reasons: it's just my credit union's site, and I'm paranoid.
D Doctor Who LJ Comm
E Doctor Who Eleven-era kinkmeme
F Flickr
G Google
H Hotmail
I ISO hunt
J Jessica's journal!
K Keith Palmer's Multi-Purpose Home Page (I do not know Keith Palmer, nor do I remember visiting his page, but it's MST3k-related, which is surely how I ended up there.)
L LJ
M More Than This: Menage and Polyamory Reviews (I still have a guest post up there, if anyone's interested!)
N NPR (Would have to sacrifice all my liberal nerd cred if this weren't on here.)
O OK Cupid (Strangers still want to meet me and do filthy things. I should update on this soon.)
P Pinterest (I'm AmyGaertner over there.)
Q no 'Q' sites. :(
R Runonopolis (My current team @ [livejournal.com profile] pulped_fictions. Only a select few are cool enough to view this comm. HOLLA! :P)
S Sherlockmas (SHERLOCKMAS! ♥ Best Sherlock fans on the net. :D)
T Twitter
U UK Nova
V Victoria Coren (bit of a crush...)
W WordPress
X no 'X' sites. (Surprisingly...)
Y YouTube
Z Zombi-fic-ation (Hellz yeah.)

What have we learned? That my life is incredibly boring.

Also, I was talking to some baby nerds today at the anime art class my friend teaches. They were talking about Tumblr, and I confessed the "interaction" on that site still baffles me. "I'm old school," I said, "I'm on LiveJournal."

Only one of them had even heard of LiveJournal.

And just like that, we have become dinosaurs...

So, y'all know how this meme works, right?
Comment on this post with ‘Hit me, Amy, one more time!’ and I’ll give you seven things I want you to talk about. They may make sense or they may be very random. Then post that list to your journal with your commentary. Other people can get lists from you and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

[livejournal.com profile] junkshop_disco gave me these lovely questions to answer:

[livejournal.com profile] jdbracknell put this together for her excellent 100 things challenge. (Which now has its own comm! [livejournal.com profile] 100things_index.) I plan on getting on with my 100 Ideas That I Had project just as soon as I scrape together two or more brain cells to have an idea. In the meantime, I could use a new "About Me/Intro" entry, so here we go! A questions meme-type thingy:

Call Me Ishmael... )

That's the end of JD's questions. Since this is going to be my new About Me post, I just thought I'd throw in a quick summary of me: I am 30 years old. I am a bisexual lady-type person. I am an atheist. I am politically and socially very liberal. I like to cook, and garden, and knit, and craft--I LOVE music, and making things myself, and farmer's markets, and libraries, and Doctor Who, and Haribo gummy bears. I value honesty and respect. It doesn't bother me if you are very religious, or you are politically more conservative, or whatever. Everyone and anyone is allowed to disagree with me openly, but please keep in mind: my journal is a place for friends. If you find my ideas and opinions to be so wrong or so offensive that you cannot discuss them with me politely and respectfully, then you won't want to be my friend. That is fine! Anyone should feel free to friend or de-friend me as it suits you. (If you do friend me and want me to friend you back, please do say hello: on one of my public entries or in a PM. I like to know who my friends are!)

Anyway. Old friends and new, do you have any questions? Is there something I left out?

Since this is a music-related post, I have some questions and observations:

1. I am irrationally annoyed with this singer calling herself Eliza Doolittle. You DO NOT get to call yourself 'Eliza Doolittle', you have a song called "Rollerblades" for Christ's sake! Can we leave the iconic literature/film characters out of it, please?

2. Sondre Lerche, Of Montreal, Wombats, and TV On the Radio all have new albums out. Has anyone heard any of them? Good? Worth buying?

3. I am want to see Fleet Foxes and the Walkmen in September, but I do not want to spend almost $45.00 to sit in the 'upper balcony', TYVM!

4. Still trying to convince my friends to see Foster the People with me next month. $15.00! Such value!

5. Any other new music out there I should be checking out? I CRAVE NEW MUSIC ALL THE TIME.

(Story time: my new journal layout has no marker selected for unordered lists, so they just appear as a block text. This displeased me, so I set out to change it. It took me about TWENTY MINUTES to figure out how to change the marker from "none" to "circle" in the style sheet, but I have done it! Hooray! /no1curr) (These are the moments when being OCD makes me want hit things, BTW.)

In trying to kill time before birthday funtimes, I am FINALLY drinking the bottle of chianti classico my parents brought me back from Italy two years ago. Let me tell you: it is STRONG STUFF! I am no lightweight, and this wine is kicking my ass!

Because I have no thoughtful content to provide, and yet still have a desire for virtual camaraderie, IT'S MEME TIME! (Play along at home!)

(From [livejournal.com profile] rachel2205, who wrote me an AWESOME BIRTHDAY FIC OMG GO READ IT! It's a BBC Sherlock Molly/Moriarty fic, and I'm telling everyone: she's just a damn good writer, so even if you're not into the pairing, give it a shot!)

The Meme:

Three Line Stories:
Leave me a prompt, a pairing [or characters, yo] and a fandom and I will write you a three line fic. (What fandom, you ask? IT DOESN'T MATTER! Even if I know absolutely nothing about your fandom, I will write you a three line fic using whatever details I happen to know about it. Should make for a good time, considering how little I know about other fandoms!)

(AND from [livejournal.com profile] nahara):

MAKE A PHOTO REQUEST! Make a request for me to take a picture of something, and I will do my damndest to provide it!

HAPPY SUNDAY, Y'ALL! I'm slightly sloppy drunk and feeling the love tonight--care to share some? :D
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Simpsons (Mr. Sparkle))
I have gone meme crazy! Ahem. But I like this one:

Uniqueness

Name a CD you own that no-one else on your flist does:

I literally own about 20 physical CDs. That's it. The vast majority of my music exists in purely digital form. BUT, the CD I own that I could quite easily guarantee no one else has is Steamy Monday, by the Impromptones. I used to be hardcore into improv, thanks to an early obsession with Whose Line Is It Anyway? Yeah, the American version sucked; I watched it anyway.

Name a book you own that no-one else on your friends list does:

Not In Front of the Servants: A True Portrait of English Upstairs/Downstairs Life, by Frank Dawes. Thanks to movies like Gosford Park and books like Alias Grace, I have a bit of an obsession with the topic. This book is excellent, and one of these days I will make use of the knowledge by writing a story set in Edwardian/Victorian England.

Name a movie you own on DVD/VHS/etc that no-one else on your friends list does:

I own a VHS copy of a porno called Shoot to Thrill. (WARNING: There is an advertisement at the top of this page that is NSFW. Naked boobies!!!) It has Ron Jeremy in it, who is just as gross as you'd imagine. Why I own it is a long story, which I don't have time to tell now since I'm about to be running late for work if I don't go get ready. BUT, when I moved out of my apartment, I packed this movie in a box with my other DVDs. (I own even fewer DVDs than I do CDs.) A box which my PARENTS unpacked. Did they freak out, get embarrassed, or confront me about it? Nope. They simply placed it on the shelf next to all my other movies.

Name a place that you have visited that no-one else on your friends list has:

The General George S. Patton Museum in Fort Knox Kentucky. Who wouldn't want to spend an hour or two viewing the discarded clothing and personal memorabilia of a dead war General?

ME! Fuck, it was boring. Anyway, the site says it's shut now for a COMPLETE TRANSFORMATION! I can only hope this transformation will include adding a fully-stocked bar and/or amusement park rides.
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Rory & Amy Wedding Dance)
[livejournal.com profile] audiopineapple was talking about the dream she had last night, and it reminded me of my own. (Forgive me for talking about dreams! I do believe this is the first time I've subjected you all to one of them, and at least it's fandom-related and therefore mildly along the lines of some of your interests?)

I dream in Doctor Who )

I got my nails done today for the wedding and, as is to be expected, the woman who did them was rather surly and put-out about it. This isn't really a problem for me: I figure if I am paying someone to scrape calluses off my feet, file my nails, and otherwise perform personal grooming activities I should damn well be able to do myself, I have no good reason to expect they should be happy about it. (At least I got to read a magazine while she did my feet. It just served to remind me how out of touch I am: it was Entertainment Weekly's "Best Entertainers of 2010" edition, and I didn't know who 4 out of the 10 entertainers even were.)

I'm never comfortable about other people grooming me, so I kept tensing up, prompting the manicurist to swat me with whatever tool she happened to be using at the time and snap, "RELAX!" (I'm not quite sure how that action is meant to relax me, but whatev.) My favorite part is when she tried to upsell me into other services:

"You know, we do waxing: eyebrow, upper lip, bikini area...RELAX! Relax...why you so tense?"

I'm sorry: it's usually under a different set of circumstances that people request to see my bikini area...

I picked up my dress yesterday from having alterations done; I just needed the straps shortened. I don't know if you can have "short shoulders", but I must, because I ALWAYS need the straps shortened on every dress I buy. I bought a new strapless bra, some "supportive undergarments", and stockings, so I think I'm all set. Wedding, here I come!
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (MST3k (Evil Co. Is in Shambles!))
Add this to the list of Wedding To-Dos: miraculously cure sudden outbreak of acne on my chin! ("Too old for acne medication, but too young for wrinkles?" When is this magic age, O Condescending Cosmetics Advertisement???)

And it's back to work today. They've cut my Tuesday hours, and trimmed off 15 minutes from my other days, which just seems petty. Oh, the joys of working for an hourly wage!

In other news, iTunes 'Genius' function, which automatically compiles playlists of my music for me, may just have changed my life. However, with the amount of information Apple needed to collect in order to activate it, combined with all the data Google already has about me, I'm pretty sure Corporate America knows a hell of a lot more about me than my own family. (I was raised by a man who believes the Peace Corps is a front for the CIA and that the FBI keeps files on all its citizens library and movie rental habits; a certain amount of paranoia comes standard issue.)

(Oh, and I am working on my playlist for [livejournal.com profile] evilhippo, who offered me a counter-challenge for our ongoing string of Music Battles! She is SO MUCH BETTER at coming up with categories than I am, and this one is really fun, so I'll offer it up to everyone who might want to participate in the fun:

SURPRISE MUSIC BATTLE: COUNTER-CHALLENGE
New Year's resolutions, the musical! At least three songs you yourself would be willing to sing in response to "What is your resolution this year?" ^_^
)

Other things that may have changed my life: Pickwick Dutch Tea Blend, from the ever-so-lovely [livejournal.com profile] voltaires_vice. Three cups today already...

As much as I love tags, it really does strike me as quite absurd that I have one for "griping", as if there would ever be a need for it. As if someone would be reading my journal, and think, "Gee, I wonder if there's a way I could go back and read EVERY SINGLE THING AMY HAS EVER COMPLAINED ABOUT? Oh look, there is!!!"
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Simpsons (Independent Thought Alarm))
My students: SO PRECIOUS! No, doing math doesn't make me a nerd: there is a whole HOST of reasons why I am a nerd, and they have nothing to do with my current profession as a math tutor. (Though I am so very glad he's taken that lesson to heart! Kids: it's OK to be smart! Jocks can do math! Hooray!)

All of this is a roundabout way of me making a sort-of introduction post. I've never made a proper one, and since I have new friends, I may as well! But before I get down to that, I would like to announce a general DE-FRIENDING AMNESTY for anyone who feels we just never really connected. I understand, really: we were young and foolish, and we just got caught up in the moment! We don't have as much in common anymore, and now we just don't know how to make time for each other...it's not me, it's you, etc. It's OK! If we don't talk at all, and you'd like to de-friend, by all means do! If we don't talk at all and, for some reason, you would like to remain friends, then do let me know here, because in a few days I am going to be conducting a minor friends cut. IT'S NOT YOU IT'S ME, etc.

Everything you never wanted to know about me, and couldn't be bothered to ask. )

Ok, so...tomorrow is my LAST DAY OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES EVER! It has been a 10 year odyssey to get this degree. You don't even want to know all of the detours and obstacles along the way. (It hasn't been ten continuous years, I should mention. Also, I am graduating with more than a FULL YEAR'S worth of extra credits. UGH!)

Tomorrow, I turn in my final paper, take two exams, and then that's it. I am graduated! I am flung out into the wide world where I must try to make my way as best I can. (OH GOD, I'M SCARED! Hold me???)

At the very least, I'll have loads more time to waste, so expect me to be EVEN MORE ever-present than I am now. I'll be finishing up all the fic commitments I've made, and then hopefully working on other projects I've wanted to have time for.

So...who wants to party with me? *hopeful smile*

So, I threw a minor tantrum in a clothing store today. I think the tantrum itself was justified; it was just staged in front of the wrong audience.

A tale of retail woe in which I am CRAZY, in PUBLIC, AGAIN! )

I'm pretty sure going back to apologize made me seem even crazier than my temper tantrum did to begin with, but what else is new? Just a side effect of KEEPIN' IT REAL, YO! ;)
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (P&P - Darcy (Gonna Bitch in Journal))
ONE WEEK LEFT OF CLASSES! Boo yah. That's right, I said BOO YAH!

I have one more paper to write, for my Complex Organizations class. (That's right, the class I hate with the professor who's a dick.) I am going to write my paper on the concept of "emotional labor" in child care facilities and how it ties in to the fact that child care workers are some of the most over-stressed and underpaid workers in the country. One of the best articles I've come across so far details the "prisoner of love" theory which postulates about why child care workers are so poorly paid: that companies exploit the intrinsic caring motives of their employees in order to pay them less.

This is a subject close to my heart, as I've spent my life working with children, and am consequently poor as a result. I've done a lot of different jobs with kids, but I've worked for two different daycares: one was a YMCA daycare, which really was a pleasant experience: the YMCA is a not-for-profit organization, and that ethos of "human benefit over profit" really did a lot to foster a positive attitude for workers and children alike. The other daycare was a massive franchise that sucked out my soul and spit it back to me at the end of every day. So yes: this is a topic close to my heart.

In other news, I still have a meme going! )
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Grown-ups)
I don't know how qualified I am to give "life lessons", and sincerity does not always come easily. (Sarcasm, on the other hand...)

I'm going to hand the job over to Dave Barry, who said it first and said it funnier. (Taken from his list of "25 Things I Learned in 50 Years", this is my top 6.)

  1. "A person who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice person."
  2. "No matter what happens, somebody will find a way to take it too seriously."
  3. "When trouble arises and things look bad, there is always one individual who perceives a solution and is willing to take command. Very often, that individual is crazy."
  4. "People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want you to share yours with them."
  5. "Your friends love you anyway."
  6. "Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance."

  1. I like to talk about myself. (Hence this meme.)
  2. I have had just about every hair color that could be considered "natural" (blonde, light brown, dark brown, nearly black, strawberry blonde, auburn, etc.) and several that are distinctly "unnatural" (purple, burgundy, fire engine red, green, etc.)
  3. I used to have quite a few piercings--eyebrow, nose, and several cartilage piercings in my ear. Now I just have three holes in my earlobe. I want to pierce my nose again.
  4. I listen to most music genres, including country. (I ♥ bluegrass!) I can't stand "pop country", however.
  5. In my life, I've made out with 6 gay men. I don't know what to do with this fact. (Hold on! I forgot that "Chris the bisexual" is now "Chris the homosexual", so make that 7.)
  6. I am not afraid of death, spiders, or public speaking. I am, however, creeped out by puppets and people in giant animal costumes. (You will NEVER find a picture of me hugging Mickey Mouse.)
  7. I once considered dumping a guy because he wasn't a registered voter.
  8. I was on the Quiz Bowl team in high school, and treasurer of the Creative Writing Club. I refused to join the National Honors Society.
  9. I once ran a smoking cessation group for people with severe psychotic disorders.
