LJ is being totally wonky. Replies people make to my comments aren't showing up in my inbox, and the ones I am receiving have all apparently been made "two hours ago", despite showing up in my inbox 10 minutes previously. You get a wag of the finger, LJ!

I chose a theme for the wedding shower I'm throwing for my future sis-in-law: "love birds"! They had these adorable, ready-to-paint birdhouses at the craft store for just $1.00 each, and this other store had decorative bird cages in bright colors, also for $1.00. I painted the birdhouses in colors to match the cages, and bought cute little fake birds. I was gonna take pics to share, but everything is all packed away now, so that'll have to wait.

I packed away all the herbs I dried for tea, and brewed myself up a cup. Delicious! I need to look up some tips for drying lemongrass, and also harvest some sage. I'm so sad that summer is over and my gardens are dying!

Book Meme ahoy! )

I'm not really happy with the title of this poem, but then I'm never happy with titles. I used to be tempted to leave all of my poetry untitled, but then I read somewhere that "leaving your poems untitled is like leaving your children unnamed", and ever since I've done my best to put at least a crappy title on each one I write.

I called this one "obsessive-compulsive" because I have been diagnosed (among other things...) as "mildly obsessive-compulsive", and this poem pretty much describes my thought process.

So, [livejournal.com profile] jacknjill270 gave me the idea of writing poetry about Sherlock Holmes. Since I'm working my way through the assignments in Writing Metrical Poetry, and the first assignment is to write a blank verse quatrain about a historical or literary figure, this is the perfect idea.

The first poem I wrote is just a quatrain, and is actually about John Watson.

To Watson
sherlock and watson on a train
Deduction, Dear--and nothing more
you see, but don't observe;
and yet you know this man much more
than can describe by word.

ETA: Does anyone know of a Sherlock Holmes community where I could post these poems? I've taken a look at the userinfo for the new comms, and they seem to only want content regarding the new BBC adaptation.

My quest to write more poetry continues. I've taken a book out of the library called Writing Metrical Poetry: Contemporary Lessons for Mastering Traditional Forms. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning the basics of metered poetry, or polishing up their skills, like me. I learned most of this stuff in my Intro to Poetry class, but it's nice to have a refresher; and, the book has exercises and assignments, which is terrific to get me writing again.

This next poem is not an assignment from the book, but is an attempt by me to rediscover blank verse. I'll warn you: it's pretty rough. What always stops me writing poetry is my need to constantly write, rewrite, and revise things. Since I need practice, I'm going to try to focus on output for now, and worry about polishing later.

If anyone with an interest in poetry would like to critique this, please do! So long as it's constructive criticism, it will help me out immensely; and I have a very thick skin, so if something's not working, please tell me.

rippling water

Breaking the Surface

Into the frigid waters, take the plunge
then bob along the surface gasping air
and when you've got a lungful, hold it in
what you can carry down is all you'll get

The air, you'll find, will soon be running out
the burning not extinguished by the wet
a memory that you are still alive:
start kicking for the surface once again.

pleiades

It isn't very often that someone invents a new form of poetry, but apparently, that is what Craig Tigerman, Lead Editor of Sol Magazine did in 1999. He called his new form a Pleiades, and it consists of a single-word title followed by a seven line stanza, the first word of which should each begin with the same letter as the title. It's quick and dirty poetry, and I wrote a few of them myself.

The three poems are loosely linked in theme (in my mind, at least), and the last two take their title from a word in the previous poem. So...here they are!

Here's a few poems I found when scanning through my old Livejournal.  I really want to start writing poetry again, so hopefully this will inspire me a little.

Ode to a Dead Squirrel

Strange to see so still a form
I've seen so quick and lithe before
A pity 'tis the day is warm
The flies have gathered all the more

The first day, still, as if in sleep
save for the busy insect cloud
the next day made to rotting meat
the flesh bereft of sprightly leap
the matted fur now forms a shroud
Memento Mori on the street.
