So: how was your weekend?
Mar. 6th, 2011 05:27 pmI had a lovely weekend. On Friday, I went to see my friend Lauren and make dinner for her and her son Dylan. (She's pregnant with baby #2, due in July, which is CRAZY!) Dylan was incredibly cranky and clingy and kept wanting her to pick him up while she was in the middle of doing something else. She kept saying, "No, Dylan, I'm not going to pick you up right now!" and then 5 seconds later...yeah.
I think it was frustrating for all of us.
I spent Saturday morning making cakes for my dad's party. Observe the results:

The "39" is for the number of years my father worked for his company. The "FREEDOM!" cake is what happens when you've spent 3 1/2 hours fussing with cake and icing bags, and your hand's cramping up, and you want something other than "Congratulations" to write on a retirement cake.
Ahem.
All the fussing I did over the music, and it ended up being too loud to hear it anyways! My youngs cousins ran riot around the hall, I played beer pong with some friends and cousins, chatted to some relatives, ate a metric ton of pizza, and drank as much beer and wine as I could before it was time to sober up so I could drive the second car home in the SURPRISE!blizzard that apparently no one saw coming. All in all, a good time.
My brother and new sister-in-law were home, so today while they took a nap I took their dog Roxie for a walk. Despite yesterday's storm, today was sunny and rather warm. (Almost 40 degrees!) We stomped around in the new snow and she chased down and destroyed half a dozen sticks. I came home to more pizza and some flat beer leftover from the keg we got for the party. (Reminds me of college days, when friends would invite you over the day after a party to finish the keg before it had to go back to the liquor store for the deposit. Good times.)
The dog's now gone, and my cat's come out of hiding. I need to get some writing done, but: eh, who wants to? There's flat beer to drink!
Also: I have decided to watch Firefly! (Why yes: I am typically about 5 years behind the times!) I had decided to give it a try yesterday and ordered the DVDs from the library, but I discovered it's debuting on the Science channel tonight at 8:00 pm, so that's probably what I'll be doing.
That, and eating leftover cake and drinking flat beer.
What's everyone else up to? How were your weekends?
Oh, also: for any flisters interested in taking part in
sherlockmas's "Spring Into Sherlock" festival, you have until Midnight EST to claim a prompt! The post to do just that is here. I still need to pick two more prompts, and I just don't know which ones to take! If anyone has a suggestion, let me know!

Date: 2011-03-06 11:27 pm (UTC)Ok, I just looked up Doomsday, and it looks AWESOME! (That could just be because it has similarities to 28 Days Later, which is one of my favorite filmes ever.) Did you like it? Would you recommend it?

Date: 2011-03-06 11:34 pm (UTC)My weekend was pretty fun-my boyfriend and I went to the roller derby game last night to cheer on a good friend of mine (also, cheap fun!), and then I met up with some friends this morning. Other than that, it's been pretty quiet, just bumming around. This is the first time in a long while that I'm not working during the weekend-it's nice to just have the downtime.
Also, I'm still fairly tired and have lost control of the English language. Be careful. There might be some rogue pronouns scurrying about.

Date: 2011-03-06 11:54 pm (UTC)Ooh, working on the weekends sucks! I remember when I used to have work/school seven days a week without any time off. Horrible! I do not do well without prolonged periods for doing nothing at all. Downtime is vital!
Your English is fine. I have a weird habit of omitting the key words from sentences when I'm tired or in a hurry. Errant pronouns I can deal with!

Date: 2011-03-07 12:51 am (UTC)It's a LOT like 28 Days Later, which I also watched fairly recently, and I thought of that a lot of the way through it. XD Definitely give it a shot. It was different than I expected, which is cool, and it is a lot of fun. :D

Date: 2011-03-07 12:52 am (UTC)And yes, watch Firefly! I can't believe it's been 9 years since it aired. I feel old. Shiny will soon be your new favorite word, I promise.
This wknd for me consisted of work, taxes (yay, all done!), and a bit of spring cleaning. Weee. Next wknd shall be a lazy wknd methinks.

Date: 2011-03-07 12:53 am (UTC)As for getting on fan-wagons late... last week I watched my first episode of... Doctor Who. Yeah. (Hey, why waste time watching crap when you have the rest of the world to do quality control for you?)

Date: 2011-03-07 03:21 am (UTC)I had a la-di-dah event last night, where I stuffed myself on free wine, deep fried appetizers and cupcakes. It was a lot of fun and I went without my husband and hung out with two girlfriends who were also stag, and we just got silly and cussed our hearts out for no good reason other than we could. So today was all about feeling fat and trying to do some yoga to detox, but otherwise a very good weekend. I'm even folding laundry as I watch tv, and it feels very relaxing.

Date: 2011-03-07 04:29 am (UTC)I'm glad that the party was fun, even if all of the work on the music didn't pay off quite as intended. :D And omg, surprise!blizzard. o_o I wasn't aware it was possible for blizzards to be sneaky. XD
Reminds me of college days, when friends would invite you over the day after a party to finish the keg before it had to go back to the liquor store for the deposit. Good times.
…I missed so many college experiences. XD
Firefly is awesome! \o/ I, uh, still haven't finished the entire season yet, but I love it all the same. The characters are so good, and it's a really fun world. :D

Date: 2011-03-07 04:35 am (UTC)Speaking of mutual love, I was running late for a thing this afternoon because I could not tear myself away from A Heart for a Heart. Husband's all at the door checking an imaginary watch with no small amount of theatrics, and I'm hissing without taking my eyes from the screen: "Hold yer horses! I have to see how this penectomy goes down!"

Date: 2011-03-07 03:27 pm (UTC)And I have already watched the first 5 episodes of Firefly! Obviously, I am enjoying it very much, but...hmm, I have a few quibbles about the inconsistency of the characterization, and am already composing epic meta essays in my head that no one is going to read, because they were over it 9 years ago! :P
Hurrah for taxes being done! Yes, a lazy weekend is def. in order!

Date: 2011-03-07 03:30 pm (UTC)And ooh, which episode of Who did you watch? Did you like it?
(Hey, why waste time watching crap when you have the rest of the world to do quality control for you?)
EXACTLY! And there's no pesky 'waiting to find out what happens', dragging it out: you get to binge on a glut of episodes right from the start, which I love! I've already seen the first five eps of Firefly and will likely watch a couple more today!

Date: 2011-03-07 03:31 pm (UTC)Free food and wine always makes for an ideal evening! And a girls' night makes it even better! :P
I spent all day yesterday chilling, but minus the attempts to get healthy--we have way too much party food left over!

Date: 2011-03-07 03:35 pm (UTC)Anything is possible here in the Frozen North! Honestly, the most surprising part was that the weather forecasters weren't hyping the storm to death for days before it happened--we didn't hear a peep about it!
I am really getting into Firefly! It's a ton of fun, and yes, I am loving the characters! However, I need to see the rest of the season to see if they're fleshed out any better. I think the writers are relying too heavily on familiar tropes/character archetypes and witty dialogue to endear the crew to us, and are falling a bit short of consistency. But who knows? Maybe it gets better. (And damn it, even though I notice the flaws, it still works! Ah, the power of familiarity combined with witty banter!)

Date: 2011-03-07 03:56 pm (UTC)Sounds like you had a nice weekend! And had nice weather! It poured on Friday - 50+ degrees and continuous rain. Then it snowed on Saturday. Go figure :)
I have yet to watch "Firefly" as well. One of these days!

Date: 2011-03-07 04:58 pm (UTC)You'll love Firefly. I think. Plenty of strong female characters, at any rate.

Date: 2011-03-07 09:17 pm (UTC)I've only just started Firefly too! I've heard such ridiculously good things about it, so I borrowed the DVD from a friend. It's fantastic so far, I just need to find the time to watch it!

Date: 2011-03-08 01:12 am (UTC)You should watch Firefly, and then you and I can have all the conversations about the show that other fans had nine years ago!

Date: 2011-03-08 01:18 am (UTC)I am loving Firefly! But you know how we had that big discussion about characterization, and how the ability to predict a character's actions are a sign of good characterization? Yeah, a lot of the characterization in Firefly is really inconsistent. Don't get me wrong: I love the characters! But I think the writers rely too heavily on familiar character tropes/archetypes and witty dialogue to endear them to the audience, and don't spend much time providing evidence for their motivations.
Anywho. Yeah, I'm about halfway through the series, and very much loving it! Zoe is awesome, but I think Kaylee is my favorite. It's so great to see a female character who is nice, sweet, and unafraid of being blatantly girly but still intelligent, competent, confidant, and taken seriously by all the men. Oh! And having a sexuality that's integrated into her character, she isn't punished, and isn't a distraction for all the other men!
I could go on about the Hooker with a Heart of Gold and how I hate that trope, but I don't know: I like Innara, for the most part. She's another one who could do with more characterization earlier on. ...and something to do, other than pine after Mal.

Date: 2011-03-08 01:19 am (UTC)Firefly is a lot of fun! But as for finding the time to watch it...yeah, I might have stayed up until 3 am last night in order to get a few eps in. Sleep? What sleep when there's TV TO WATCH! :P

Date: 2011-03-08 03:58 am (UTC)And heyyyyy... I hear a rumor today that Firefly will be back on the air? So you see, your timing is perfect, you skipped major amounts of cancellation angst!

Date: 2011-03-08 04:05 am (UTC)OMG, don't tease me, where did you hear such a thing???? (It'll be even better than when the Sci-Fi channel brought MST3k back from the dead!!!)
OMG, the BBC ROCKS! Tell your husband to climb on board! (Hurry up and finish Doctor Who so you can join the squee when they come back for the sixth series!)
I don't watch Being Human either. My opinion? ...meh.
no subject
Date: 2011-03-08 03:05 pm (UTC)Being Human... it's aggravating. On the plus side, the characters really do have some endearing chemistry. But it doesn't quite outweigh the negatives... so many wince-inducing cliches. Twilight had a more original take on supernatural angst. That's right. Twilight. I said it. That's a pretty low bar to flub, writers.
P.S. That icon is AWESOME! (Though somehow it makes my mind jump straight to House.)

Date: 2011-03-09 01:14 am (UTC)Eek! If Twilight is looking good by compariosn, then...yeah. Not gonna go near it!
Hee, the icon is a quote from MST3k! It tends to be my default "being ridiculous about science fiction stuff" icon. :P
