apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Magenta (Rocky Horror))
First and foremost, BUT THIS BOOK:

It contains a story written by none other than the fantastically talented [livejournal.com profile] ladylovelace and is available in both paperback and Kindle form.

In garden news: I finally have little baby watermelons on my vines! I've been able to spot two so far, only slightly bigger than a jellybean, and that makes me very happy! Also making me happy are the seven pumpkins I have growing that are now about 1-2 lbs. each. While I am melting in the heat, the veggies are diggin' it, and all the plants are just full of new growth. Here's some gratuitous veggie pics: Read more... )

Things I am NOT happy about, gardenwise: the mildew, my arch-nemesis. END ROT! Ok, so I have seven pumpkins growing nicely, but none of the new little baby pumpkins are making it! They're rotting and falling off the vine before they get bigger than golfball-sized. It is epic sad! :( Various other forms of fungal wilt are striking my nutmeg melons (which otherwise have adorable little fuzzy fruits on them!) and the cucumbers. Everday I am ripping out a few feet of vine that have given up on life. And this FRIGGIN' HUMIDITY is torture!

Also also: more people need to play my game with me! It works thusly:
  • You give me the name of a color or an emotion.
  • I give you something that reminds me of or represents that color or emotion: a picture, a quote, a drabble, etc.
  • I give you a color or emotion, and then you do the same!

And...go!
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Bad Music (Life's Too Short))
This is such a great idea, I am kicking myself for not thinking of it first! I have to ponder out my prompts, but then I am all over this thing!

You make a prompt, someone claims it, and then you get a lovely mix of songs to enjoy! Prompts can be fandom-specific, general, original, a quote, a song, etc... GO AND HAVE FUN!

I've now watched each of the first two episodes of the new season twice. I have Questions and Concerns. I would like to know if other people share my questions and concerns, and if they have any clever speculation they'd like to share as to the answers. Let me know your thoughts! But please: NO SPOILERS FOR UPCOMING EPISODES!

Cut for those who haven't seen the new series yet. )

(If I ever get around to joining a personals site, that's going to be my headline. [livejournal.com profile] rachel2205, my love, you put up with so much! :P xx)

Spring Into Sherlock over at [livejournal.com profile] sherlockmas is going well! *knock wood* The submissions are rolling in, and I've managed to design things in a way that I don't have to threaten to break any kneecaps if people don't come through with their commitments! (Though I may have threatened the lives of a few anonymous kittens. Hey, whatever works!)

Here's a conversation I had with two students tonight: (Isabelle is 10, Max is 13.)

Max (apropos of nothing): How do you think the world is going to end?
Me (unfazed): I think in a few hundred million years, the sun will expand, and...
Isabelle: You don't think the world will end in 2012?
Me: No...
Max: You don't think the world will end in a zombie apocalypse?
Me: I don't know...what if it did?
Max: I would hide out here! (Meaning the math center.)
Me (scoffing): Are you kidding me? Look at those big glass windows up front! The zombies would get right through that...
Isabelle: I'd hide in the prize case!
Max: I was going to say that!
Me: How would you even fit in there? Besides, it's made of clear glass...you guys really gotta work on your zombie survival plan!
Max: Well, then I'd hide in the trunk of your car!
Me: I don't know...I don't have a very big car.
Max: We'd drive over to Kroger (a grocery store), and eat a bunch of food!
Me: That could be a plan...I could die in a Kroger.

Sometimes, being a good tutor means teaching the kids about life, and not just about math. :P

[livejournal.com profile] dark_fest is a multifandom fest for fiction with dark themes. What is that you ask? According to the fests userinfo:

For the purposes of this fest, we allow "dark" can have quite a wide definition, since one person's bonechiller is another's stroll in the park. Dark fic can be subtle as well as explicit. Dark fic can be difficult subject matter, moral ambiguities, unhappy endings, no win scenarios, secrets, lies and shames, psychological messes, a look into the void, a twist of a canon mood or theme. Dark fic can be bad thoughts, bad deeds, bad decisions. Dark fic can be pure evil, it can be in over its head, it can be wrong for all the right reasons, it can pave the road to hell with good intentions. Dark fic can be horror, violence, torture, abuse, non-con. Dark fic can be subtle and understated. Dark fic can be psychological. Dark fic can be dark humour. The purpose of this fest is to explore all these murky corners.

In any case, I love dark fiction and will be all over this shiz! Prompting is open now (click the banner to go to the prompting post) and will close on January 28th.

Check it out, and let me know if you're at all interested so I'll have someone to squee/commisserate with!
