RECCING
Date: 2011-06-17 05:38 am (UTC)Title: Some Danger Involved
Author: Will Thomas
Length: 300-ish pages
Summary: Set in Victorian London, detective Cyrus Barker takes the case of the murder of a young man in the Jewish ghetto. He hires Thomas Llewelyn, a smart, gutsy man who's fresh out of prison and down on his luck, as his assistant. As they get closer to the truth, Llewelyn is drawn ever further into Barker's world and that of the London underworld.
Books it's similar to: the Sherlock Holmes stories. Obviously.
Why I'd rec it: If "brilliant, eccentric Victorian detective and his loyal, stalwart assistant solve crimes" doesn't catch your interest, then this isn't for you. Will Thomas has written several Sherlock Holmes pastiches, and it shows. Some Danger Involved isn't the most original concept, but it's an enjoyable read regardless. The mystery is interesting, the setting is strong, and Llewelyn gets to be smart and action-y instead of the typical bumbling, mostly useless sidekick (I'm looking at you, Nigel Bruce!Watson). It's a fun, quick read with an undercurrent of humor. This is the first in the Barker & Llewelyn series, and while the others are good this one is by far the best.

Date: 2011-06-18 09:31 am (UTC)Title: A Quiet Belief in Angels
Author: R J Ellory
Length: ~400 pages
Summary: In 1939 in the small rural community of Augusta Falls, Georgia, twelve-year-old Joseph Vaughan learns of the brutal assault and murder of a young girl. It is the first in a series of killings that will plague the community over the next decade.Even when the killings cease, a shadow of fear follows Joseph for the rest of his life.
Books it's similar to: In Cold Blood. (In fact, Ellory dedicates the book to Captoe.)
Why I'd rec it: A beautiful, chilling book. You can feel the heat of a southern summer coming off the pages, the desperation, the sense of place. I'm not usually a fan of crime/mysteries but this felt like so much more than simply its genre. Sumptuous language and a believable set of characters. At times it may be a bit purple for some readers, but it was just right for me.
RECCING
Date: 2011-06-18 06:00 pm (UTC)Title: A Conspiracy of Paper
Author: David Liss
Length: About 500 pages
Summary: Benjamin Weaver is an ex-boxer and a Jew, trying to make it in London of the early 1700s. His estranged father, a stock trader, dies under mysterious circumstances, and Weaver, already well-known in detective circles, tries to figure out the mystery.
Books it's similar to: Um, Sherlock Holmes, lol.
Why I'd rec it: This is a brilliantly researched book, and the characters are really well-drawn. It's also unusual, set as it is against the backdrop of the first-ever stock market crash in history, and the rift between Iberian and German Jews in England.
