Ahem. Now that's out of the way...
The Pixies concert was really fun! It was nice to see
planejane again, and very cool to meet
kel_reiley!
I got there super early, because I wanted to make sure to get close parking, in lieu of the Tigers game starting an hour before the show. I would have waited outside, but it was miserable and rainy, so I ducked into the Hockeytown Cafe for a beer while I waited. It's...an interesting place. Full of white people in baseball caps. Not really my crowd, but the bartender was very sweet and we chatted a bit while I waited.
Turns out,
planejane and I should have synchronized our phones for the evening, because she was able to receive the text I sent her, but unable to call me back. I don't even know! But as I was leaving the bar at 6:20 to meet her and Kel in front of the Fox, I just so happened to run into them as I was leaving: they'd ducked into the sports bar to get out of the rain.
We chose a lovely little Italian bistro for dinner--one of the few places not crowded with Tigers fans! Kel and Jane ordered love, sophisticated cocktails, and I got a 20 oz Ghettoblaster. Ya know, 'cause I'm classy like that! :P (It's a really good beer, despite the thug name.) I ordered a Margarita pizza (sic). I don't know if they were doing a special for Passover, but the thin, flat crust tasted a lot like Matzah: not a good quality in a pizza crust! Otherwise, it was very nice.
The Fox Theatre where the show was held is GORGEOUS! Despite being a lifelong resident of SE Michigan, this was my first time seeing a show there. As per usual, my pics are crappy, but here's a glimpse at the gorgeous Indian-inspired ceiling of the place:

The opening band was a group called Imaginary Cities. They were very good, but the band sort of drowned out the vocalist, who was fantastic! I'll have to find some of their songs and hear what they sound like in a studio.
The Pixies opened by projecting the surrealist film Un Chien Andalou (a big inspiration for the band) complete with eyeball slicing. It was pretty awesome. :P They then played a couple of B Sides I didn't recognize, before starting on the Doolittle album. The experience of the band was only heightened by the presence of a Super Fan directly in front of us. For those unfamiliar, Super Fans are those audience members who are enjoying the show on a completely different level from everyone else. This guy was in raptures, busting out some of the most unique moves I've ever seen. Sure, he wasn't necessarily dancing to the beat of the exact song that was being played at any particular moment, but it's that kind of narrow and repressed thinking that holds most concert-goers back from fully appreciating the experience of the music! As Jane observed: "Much secondhand enjoyment!"
After the show, began the traditional Ruckus in anticipation of an encore. Jane asked what Kel and I wanted to hear, and we were unanimously heartset on Gigantic. The Super Fan wanted to hear Where Is My Mind?, also a good choice.
When Kim came back out and announced they were going to play more B sides, I very nearly despaired! WE DON'T WANT MORE B SIDES! The band played the B sides, left the stage, and the house lights came back on. It looked like we were out of luck, but they finally came back and played both Where Is My Mind AND Gigantic, as well as a couple other songs. Awesome! I was grinning like a fool.
Exiting the theater and getting to my car was a breeze, and I actually navigated my way out of the city and onto the freeway without making a SINGLE wrong turn. GO ME!
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to sleep last night, and had to drag my butt out of bed at 5:30 am to drive my parents to the airport. They bickered and fretted all the way there, but we made it without incident, and they should be, at this moment, enjoying the Florida sunshine and getting ready to board their cruise ship. I am giddy with anticipation of having them out of my hair for 10 days! (I love my parents to death, but my natural hermit-like tendencies that enjoy copious stretches of solitude often butt up against their clingy, homebody natures. Family: so similar, and yet so different! :P)
Now, I need to see if I have any food coloring in the house before I head out to the BFFs for Thai take-out and Easter egg decorating. Fun fun!
Happy belated Passover, Happy Easter, and HAVE A FANTASTIC WEEKEND, y'all! ♥

Date: 2011-04-23 09:45 pm (UTC)Glad you had fun seeing the Pixies-and man, that theater looks gorgeous. And superfans do really make the experience better. I got to see them a few years ago at UMass (coughcough), but that auditorium was nowhere near as gorgeous, and no experimental films were projected on any screens.

Date: 2011-04-24 03:55 pm (UTC)Ah, I should have checked! I heard all about it Monday, when all my Jewish students were re-arranging their times so they could celebrate the first night's Seder, but then lost track after that. So HAPPY PASSOVER! :D
The Pixies were a lot of fun! I'm glad I got to see them when I had the chance.

Date: 2011-04-24 03:57 pm (UTC)It was a very fun concert! But hearing my friend's recounting of the Decemberists concert I missed made me very sad! I really wanted to see both shows! She recorded seven minutes of footage where they played the Mariner's Revenge Song, complete with audience participation, and it looked so fun! I am determined to see them soon.

Date: 2011-04-24 01:18 am (UTC)The Fox looks lovely! There was an Indian-inspired movie theater back in Berkeley that I really need to see again; I love venues that give you something to gaze at while you're waiting for the action to start. :D
And I'm really glad the action lived up, by the sound of it! I was about to be very disappointed about your underwhelming encore, lol, so I'm glad to hear that worked out, too! XD Also awesome that you had your own personal Super Fan Performance going on concurrently, hahaha. XD
I actually navigated my way out of the city and onto the freeway without making a SINGLE wrong turn.
I don't think this has ever happened to me. In my life. XD

OMG, I know, right?? I am SO BAD with navigating! Fortunately, in Detroit, if I can make my way to a highway--ANY highway--I can get home from there. The fact that I was able to take the route home I intended to take in the first place is just unprecedented! :P

OK, I'm done with the caps-lock squeeing :) It was really good, for reals.

Date: 2011-04-24 04:09 pm (UTC)Eee, I watched it! I watched it! SO GOOD! I love the Monster of the Week--they're SO CREEPY! (Creepy = good!) And OMG, WHAT? Amy is pregnant already??? le gasp!
I need to collect my thoughts into a more orderly coherence, but yeah, that'll do it for now!

Date: 2011-04-24 07:03 pm (UTC)Wasn't the episode AMAZING? I can't get over it - I just rewatched bits of "The Pandorica Opens," "The Big Bang," and bits of "The Impossible Astronaut." I LOVE THIS SHOW.
