apple_pathwaysI went into the library's used book nook-a-ma-jig today for the first time. I've always walked right past it on the way to the CDs, not daring to poke my head in: me in a used book store is like letting Robert Downey, Jr. loose in a pharmacy. But today, I was enticed in by their Valentine's sale: 10 romance novels for $1.00! For awhile, I was tempted to buy a bunch as gifts for the flist, but: 1. the books may be cheap, but shipping is not! and 2. there was no gay romance, which is what most of you are into, anyway. (And on a side note: though at the time I dismissed the idea as pointless and rude, as I sit here I'm starting to become convinced that I should have gone up to the old lady librarians and demanded, loudly, "Excuse me, but where's your gay porn?!" 'Cause seriously, WTF: if they find it appropriate to sell books about medieval virgins having their ladybits plundered by seething, rock-hard manhoods then they shouldn't be squeamish about the ladybit on ladybit and manhood on manhood action.)
ANYWAY. (I swear to Bob, that should be the title of this journal...)
The books I got are made of fantastic:
The Nymphos of Rocky Flats: (bolding mine)

Not bad for a dollar, right? (Assuming it's not one of those "humorous" novels that has my eyes rolling out of my head on every page.)
The other books I got were Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston; Alphabet Juice, by Roy Blount, Jr. (one of my favorite panellists from Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me!); and A Perfect Love, by Sandra Landry. The last one is described as a "time travel romance": a modern day woman is transported back to 12th century England to be romanced by a knight named Faulk. The time travel is accomplished when she falls off a boat and then is just kinda washed ashore in the past. Not the most creative of devices, but for a quarter, I'm willing to give it a shot!
In other news, I continue to be underwhelmed by Jenny Lewis's non-Rilo Kiley projects. I'm listening to I'm Having Fun Now, recorded as Jenny and Johnny with her boyfriend Jonathon Rice. *sigh* Is there no hope of getting the band back together? None at all? :'-(

Date: 2011-02-12 02:56 am (UTC)I'm trying too hard. Honestly, my problem in life is that I actually care what I'm writing. Fuck it, I'm having contagious satyromania in space with vampires (and yet I feel this could make more sense...)
Seriously, though, any ten used books for a dollar would have me spending at least four or five dollars. I am dangerous around second-hand books.

Date: 2011-02-12 03:26 am (UTC)Only the paperback romances were 10 for $1.00. (I only bought one, so I had to pay $0.25.) The hardcover was $1.00 and the other two paperbacks were $0.50 each. I...had to give myself a time limit. I am trying not to buy so many books, because a. I have nowhere to put them b. I have no money and c. I am at the library every week anyway, and I do not need to own every book I read.
Yeah, it's not going that well.
At least this time I limited myself to books I haven't read yet! I made myself put down copies of Girl With a Pearl Earring (which I own, but not in hardcover!), The Alchemist, and one of Al Franken's books. I didn't even let myself look at the gardening and cookbooks.
