$15.00 at a consignment shop! Don't adjust your screen: those are 5 inch heels! ;)

I wanna make out with these shoes

They're Steve Madden, too; normally I don't care much about labels, but I hate it when secondhand shops charge you $12-$15 bucks for a cheap department store brand I could have bought on clearance for half as much.

ETA: since my Flist seem to be a knowledgable, learned bunch, I thought I would pose you all a question. I bought these shoes from a chain of secondhand stores called Plato's Closet. Does anyone know WTF the name means? Is it a reference I'm not getting? Is there a passage in the Republic where Plato sells one of his old togas for cash?

To keep this post from being completely shallow, a plea to all the audiobook fans!

I have an Audible.com membership, and I get a free download every month. What should I go for this month? I always have a hard time deciding. So tell me: is there something out new that I should check out? An old favorite that's simply amazing? HELP!

"Assassination Vacation" by Sarah Vowell. Her most recent book "The Wordy Shipmates" is good as well, but AV is my favorite.

Ooh, that's a good idea! I love Sarah Vowell. Nice call!

Those are some serious shoes. I love them, even if the thought of putting them on myself makes me think of all the horrible things that would immediately happen to my ankles. (-;

For me, it's usually the balls of my feet that have the problem when all my weight is shifted forward. I have an absolutely gorgeous pair of olive green patent leather five inch heels that draw tons of compliments, but I have to make sure I'm going to spend most of the evening sitting or I won't make it through the night!

And yeah...I realize how ridiculous that sounds. :/

Those shoes are AMAZING and I am so jealous. :)

As for audiobooks, I don't listen to them much but I really loved The Adventures of Tom Sawyer as read by Patrick Fraley. He does a wonderful job with all the different voices for the characters. I had it on cassette tapes (cassettes! I feel so old, lol) when I was a kid and listened to them until they broke.

Would you believe I've never read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer? (And I call myself a Lit Nerd!) There are just some classics I can't work up the will to read. (Like Moby Dick; 800+ pages of fishing? No thank you...)

(cassettes! I feel so old, lol)

You and me both, babe! I once tried to explain cassette tapes to one of my students: how sometimes the tape would come out, and you'd have to get a pencil and wind it back up again without creasing it. I may as well have been trying to explain the phonograph to him. :/

GASP! You've never read Tom Sawyer? That's a shame, because it really is quite good...and not nearly as long as Moby Dick, lol. Mark Twain is one of my favorite authors and I've read Tom Sawyer so many times I could quote most of it, lol.

It's so weird seeing toys that I played with as a kid in antique stores and selling on ebay as collectibles. I'm not even that old!

I love the idea of Mark Twain--he has all those witty aphorisms--I've just never gotten around to reading much of his work. I know I should, though...

I'm always amazed when they take TV shows from my childhood and bring them BACK. Especially since a lot of shows from my childhood were crap. I mean, I loved them at the time, but...yeah, crap. A lot of cartoons were produced only as a marketing tool to sell the accompanying toys.

Strawberry Shortcake, She-Ra, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles...none of them really stand up to the test of time, but they've all been re-made!

As a giant nerd, Plato's Closet pokes fun at Plato's Allegory of the Cave. And now I'm loling at the idea of philosophers finding wisdom from second-hand clothes as opposed to shadows, hee.

I heart those shoes, so pretty! I've found Plato's Closet and Goodwill stores to be gold mines in terms of name brands. It's kinda fun with what you can find.

But how is it a reference to his allegory of the cave? Is it because closets and caves are both dark, enclosed spaces? Still confused...

I have mixed luck with secondhand shops. Like I said, they have piles of shoes that cost 30 bucks or so brand new, so why would I pay 15 for them secondhand?! But when you score, it's pretty awesome!

That's what I got out of it. I don't think we gain any new wisdom or insight to the outside world via the Closet, but eh, it sort of works. :)

Indeed it is awesome! I usually hit up Goodwill for new books to read and cute little gift ideas. Just found an awesome tea-set from England a few weeks ago.

Tea sets! I can't wait until I have a house of my own and room to collect all of the weird, wonderful stuff I love, like tea sets.

Why yes, my aspiration is to be one of those crazy cat ladies who has to be dug out from under an avalance of knick knacks when she dies, why do you ask?? ;)

Haha, it's my first tea set! I'm so proud. And the coolest thing is that it's Spode, this awesome English brand, and supposedly it's from around the 1800s...I paid 8 bucks for it :). Now it sits all pretty in my cabinet.

Nothing wrong with that, hee :)

OMG! My mouth watered. Those are freaking fantastic! This summer I found Steve Madden altered vintage Mary Janes for $2.00 at consignment and squealed in public, very embarrassingly.

I have always wondered why they use that name too. I actually asked an owner of one of the stores and she had no idea. So yeah... cannot help you there, but I love that store.

Music recommendations: Lissie, Reamonn, The Good Lovelies, Psapp, The National, Within Temptation (I always recommend this group... ALWAYS.), Fleming & John, or Over the Rhine.

Book Recommendation: Haven Kimmel Iodine

LOVE The National! I got a bunch of their albums last month; they are awesome! I'll check out the rest.

Oh, I have such a thing for Mary Janes! Not sure how well I pull them off, but I used to have about four pairs of them.

Embarrassing in public? I know it well! In thrift stores, I have a tendency to get all up in the racks, move things around, pile things on the floor, etc. (I put everything to rights again before I leave, though: I've worked retail and know what a nightmare it is when people mess up your shelves!)

SHOES! WOW - THOSE ARE STATEMENT SHOES!

I've got a pair of Steve Madden boots and a couple of pairs of sandals.

I like those shoes A LOT!

I have no recs. :( My brain is dead after watching The Tudors (late to the party, I know) and starting a knitting project (a scarf with the cable pattern from Watson's sweater in Sherlock!!!!!!) I'm so excited to have a little piece of Watson wrapped round my neck!

I need to watch the Tudors! As far as I can tell, it's exactly the kind of show I'd love, I've just never gotten around to it.

Oh man, I do love me some shoes. :) I just need to invent more occasions now for me to wear all these shoes!

...maybe the suggestion is that Plato was secretly gay...

Except, you know, it's really not a secret. There's a music/general geekery store here called "Plato's", which I suspect is mostly to make it sound smart.

Am drooling over those shoes. I have a similar pair, but they're shocking blue which makes them a little hard to wear. Yours are a much, much prettier colour.

I love rainbow-colored shoes! Though yes, some colors are harder to coordinate in outfits than others.

I'm glad I'm not missing some obvious reference to Plato. I was afraid I was going to post my question, and immediately be swarmed with replies that make me feel like an uncultured trogolodyte!

1. Your shoes are EPIC. I want them. (I'm a bit of a shoe whore... I mean, my dress size fluctuates like the tide but my shoes size never changes. ♥)

2. Re. ETA. Do not know the answer, however I feel the need to tell you I love you. You make me laugh. Can I please molest you??

3. AUDIBLE!!!!! I had a year's subscription the the UK version of that two years ago. The books I bought were:
Memoirs of Geisha
The Prestige
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle
I Capture the Castle
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Catch-22
Never Let Me Go
The Kite Runner
The Book Thief
Water for Elephants
Lolita

My favourites were Nabokov's Lolita read by Jeremy Irons, Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, The Kite Runner read by the author Khaled Hosseini and The Book Thief. The only problem with the latter was that the book, unknown to me, was that it has drawings in it and I missed out on that aspect, but otherwise I think the voice actor was brilliant. I Capture the Castle is one of my favourite books of ALL TIME, but I didn't quite gel with the voice actor on the audio I bought. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is supposed to be a fantastic book but I was deeply disappointed, when I realised it was basically Hamlet redone (AGAIN) I got a bit grumpy... but that's just personal opinion. Lots of peopled loved that book.

Er... hope some of that helped???

That definitely helps! Lolita is a great suggestion! It's ages since I've read it, and I can imagine Jeremy Irons doing an awesome job with it.

Also: it's super long! I do A LOT of driving, and so have quite a bit of time to listen to music and audiobooks.

Can I please molest you??

Oh, uhm...I don't know if I'm comfortable...

Oh, all right, you talked me into it. Molest away!
