5 questions meme

Questions from [livejournal.com profile] switchbladesis:

1. Do you think about math the same way you think about writing? Are your strengths/weaknesses similar in both?

Umm...no! I don't think about writing and math in the same way at all, really. So much so that I'm really having trouble answering this question: it's like asking "Do you think about oranges the same way you think about swimming?" I'm having trouble finding the connections.

I think writing is a lot harder for me than math. Numbers are numbers: there are rules for how they work. That's not to say there isn't room for creativity in math--for any given problem, there are many, many ways to arrive at the correct answer. But that's just it: there is a correct answer! (Usually only one, but not always.) With writing, sure, there are rules: but then there are people who break them in such beautiful ways. Whether or not a piece of writing is beautiful will always be subjective, while the square root of 4 will always be 2. (Or -2.)

If I could play with words the same way I play with numbers, I'd be a much better writer.

2. Was any of your family into crafting/gardening while you were growing up, or is it something that you picked up later?

Yes. My mother picked up gardening from her father. Her sisters and one of her brothers also garden--my Uncle Mike is a Master Gardener. Green is in our blood!

As for crafting, my mother did a lot more of it when she was younger. Her mother was a fantastic seamstress, and I'm sorry she wasn't well enough to teach me before she died. Her mother, my great grandmother, was an avid crocheter. You would not believe the mountains of lace, doilies, and table cloths she left behind! All done with tiny hooks and cotton thread.

My dad and a couple of his brothers like woodworking and fixing things, and so I learned how to design building projects (cat condos, pumpkin trellises, birdhouses, etc.) from him, and also how to use tools--including power tools.

So...I just grew up doing things with my hands! Probably where my obsession with "I can make this!" came from.

3. Pretend that housing and employment aren't an issue-where would you move to?

I would love to live in London for awhile! I'd aim for another major world city, but my foreign language skills are so-so, as you'll discover on the last day of this meme. ;)

4. What's the strangest question you've ever gotten in an interview?

I don't even know! I tend to erase interviews from my brain as soon as they're over. I can, however, tell you worst answer I've ever given in an interview! The question was "What would you say is your weak point?" or something like that. And I actually said: "I'm a bit confrontational."

What. The. FUCK! We have moved way past honesty, and STRAIGHT onto stupidity! (I still got the job. It was my third year working for this summer camp, and the interview was just a formality.)

5. What's your favorite timewasting site on the internet?

You mean besides Livejournal? :P I like The Nerdist. They're as obsessed with Doctor Who as I am, have fun podcasts, and keep me abreast of what's going on in the World of Nerd.

Since this is a music-related post, I have some questions and observations:

1. I am irrationally annoyed with this singer calling herself Eliza Doolittle. You DO NOT get to call yourself 'Eliza Doolittle', you have a song called "Rollerblades" for Christ's sake! Can we leave the iconic literature/film characters out of it, please?

2. Sondre Lerche, Of Montreal, Wombats, and TV On the Radio all have new albums out. Has anyone heard any of them? Good? Worth buying?

3. I am want to see Fleet Foxes and the Walkmen in September, but I do not want to spend almost $45.00 to sit in the 'upper balcony', TYVM!

4. Still trying to convince my friends to see Foster the People with me next month. $15.00! Such value!

5. Any other new music out there I should be checking out? I CRAVE NEW MUSIC ALL THE TIME.

Sondre Lerche is a guy--he's Norweigan! I don't have a lot of his music, but he did the soundtrack for Dan in Real Life (a rather good Steve Carrell movie that came out a few years ago) and he's sung with Regina Spektor. (On that album, actually.)

My musical tastes have been swaying pretty heavily into Bluegrass/Country territory. I love it, but I do want to keep up with my pretentious indie hipster music, as it's my first love. :P

Big Bang! Oh, the mere idea terrifies me. You are a far braver woman than I! Good luck to you!
