As far as I know, Rory isn't a girl's name in the US either. In the case of my student, it's a nickname--her full name is Aurora, and I just call her Rory.
Some American fic writers might associate Rory as a girl's name due to a popular drama series called Gilmore Girls which ran for quite awhile when I was a teenager. The teenaged girl on that show was called Rory, but from what I understand, in that case it was a nickname as well: short for Lorelei.
I wouldn't be surprised if it became more popular as a girl's name in the US, as women who grew up watching Gilmore Girls start having kids!
