That may not be an appropriate subject title for a post, but it is my favorite lyric from Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon. (It may be one of my favorite lyrics ever, I'm not gonna lie! The metrics, the alliteration...the macabre LOLs it inspires! ♥)
So the time is drawing nigh for Halloween--my most favoritest holiday of the year! I've already started working on my costume, bought goodies to hand out to my students, and now I would like to burn a fresh Halloween CD to take with me to parties and play for the Trick or Treaters.
So tell me, darlings: What are your favorite Halloween songs? What would you most like to see on a Halloween mix?
Please do include the obvious ones we've all heard and boogied to before, and the not-so-obvious ones I may not have heard of, or may not have associated with Halloween before but just fit like a glove!

Date: 2010-10-22 10:43 pm (UTC)Add to all that--Halloween is totally my favorite holiday too! I'm not actually dressing up--but my son is going to be Spiderman (I may or may not be living vicariously--I love Spiderman.)
Anyway, as for other Halloween songs, I mostly listen to the Nightmare Before Christmas songs if I'm in that kind of mood, because they're pretty much kid-friendly :D
P.S. The recaptcha said 'ressled many' lol
I am quite happy to be your heterosexual doppleganger (-;
Date: 2010-10-23 12:43 am (UTC)Is it terrible that Halloween is one of the biggest reasons why I want to have kids? I can't wait until my friend's son is old enough to Trick or Treat so I have a legit reason to do it. (People tend to think it's weird when you just borrow random kids.)
I love listening to little boys talk about their Halloween costumes. I learned way more than I ever wanted to know about the different uniforms of the Star Wars clone army officers last week. "And then there's this guy and he wears this and there's a gun here and he has a belt here and red on his chest and..."
Why no costume for you? Not even a hat? Some cat ears?

Date: 2010-10-23 01:11 am (UTC)Haha, well, I didn't even wait for my son to be 'old enough'. I took him when he was 3 months old! I just carried him around, and he fell asleep in my arms, and I just kept trick-or-treating! Now he's three years old, though, so it's a lot more fun now :)
Um, I'm going to wear my Nightmare Before Christmas hoodie. It glows in the dark :)

Date: 2010-10-23 01:54 am (UTC)My "nephew" was a froggy last year; he was 5 months old. This year, he's one and a half, and I'll have to ask his mom what she's dressing him as. I am just such a fan of babies in costumes, you don't even know! I'll bet your son was adorable.
And your hoodie sounds very cute! Def. Halloween-approved. :)

I'm not really into Halloween - just do it for the kids. But I love this song. The subject is creepy, though ... carve mince pies from children's thighs and feed them to the fairies ...

Date: 2010-10-23 12:36 am (UTC)I've always been a fan of horror and the macabre, even as a little kid. When I was ten years old I dressed up as the grim reaper. All the other little girls were princesses and kittens and fairies, and I showed up in a long black robe with a hood and a sickle and my face all painted white and my eyes blackened. No one recognized at me first--it was pretty awesome!
What are your girls gonna be?

Date: 2010-10-23 01:17 am (UTC)Of course, it's a folk song, so there's no one right way, but here's my favorite version:
Now in the Tower of London, large as life
The ghost of Anne Boleyn walks, they declare.
Poor Anne Boleyn was once King Henry's wife -
Until he had the headsman bob her hair!
Ah yes! he did her wrong long years ago
And 'round she walks each night to tell him so.
With her head tucked underneath her arm
She walks the Bloody Tower!
With her head tucked underneath her arm
At the midnight hour
She comes to haunt King Henry, she means giving him 'what for',
Ah yes, she's going to tell him off for having spilt her gore.
And just in case the headsman wants to give her an encore
She has her head tucked underneath her arm!
With her head tucked underneath her arm
She walks the Bloody Tower!
With her head tucked underneath her arm
At the midnight hour.
Along the drafty corridors for miles and miles she goes,
She often catches cold, poor thing, it's cold there when it blows,
And it's awfully awkward for the Queen to have to blow her nose
With her head tucked underneath her arm!
With her head tucked underneath her arm
She walks the Bloody Tower!
With her head tucked underneath her arm
At the midnight hour.
Now sometimes old King Henry gives a spread
For the lords and ladies in his ghostly crew.
The headsman carves the joint and cuts the bread,
When in comes Anne Boleyn to queer the do;
She holds her head up with a wild war whoop,
And Henry cries, 'Don't drop it in the soup!'
With her head tucked underneath her arm
She walks the Bloody Tower!
With her head tucked underneath her arm
At the midnight hour.
One night she caught King Henry, he was in the castle bar,
Said he, 'Are you Jane Seymour, Anne Boleyn, or Cath'rine Parr?
For how the sweet san fairy ann should I know who you are
With your head tucked underneath your arm!'

Date: 2010-10-23 06:13 am (UTC)I always think of Halloween as the appropriate time for metal. Cradle of Filth, Nine Inch Nails (try the older stuff), Marilyn Manson.
Of if you'd rather not hear about death and dismemberment, Otyg has songs about fairies. But they're in Swedish :/
LOL, I obviously suck at Halloween.

Date: 2010-10-23 03:25 pm (UTC)I always enjoy creepy-only-when-you-think-about-it acoustic-type songs this time of year.
You Are the Blood - the Castanets. (I'm recommending the original over Sufjan Stevens' cover, just because it's more immediately creepy and I'm currently in love with it).
Pity Dance - DM Stith. (Actually, the whole of Heavy Ghost is wonderfully atmospheric fall music, and I recommend this album to everyone knowing full well that it really isn't an album for everyone, but I adore it and hope someone else will as well.)
The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead - Final Fantasy (now known properly as Owen Pallet).
They Are Night Zombies (...etc.) - Sufjan Stevens.
Ghost Pirates Without Heads - P:ano (Actually this isn't subtly creepy at all, but I think I stopped being subtle already; it's just straight-up about Halloween.)
Then there are the less acoustic ones, like:
Start Wearing Purple - Gogol Bordello. (Perfect costuming song, though it was introduced to me as the perfect song for the Joker. I think it works equally for both.)
The Forest Scares the Hell Out of Me - Say Hi to Your Mom (these days known simply as "Say Hi").
Nights of the Living Dead - Tilly and the Wall
A few of these aren't suitable for Trick-or-Treaters, of course, and your mileage in general may vary. (-;

Date: 2010-10-24 10:07 pm (UTC)I've never thought of putting Start Wearing Purple on a Halloween mix, but it would actually fit really well! Plus, I just love that group, and I'll take any excuse to put them on a mix--one of the funnest shows I've ever been to!

Date: 2010-10-25 12:51 am (UTC)And I definitely need to see Gogol Borello. Everyone I know is always telling me that their live show is fantastic, but I never seem to known when they're in town before it's too late.
Consolidating comments a bit (because you don't need more from me at this point), I finally got around to listening to the full version of your Female Characters mix. Very well done. (-: And I don't think there was a single song on it that I didn't like. (-:
