My Ouchy Feet, and Book Meme Days 04 - 07
Sep. 15th, 2010 09:00 pmToday I wore a pair of shoes that I've worn about a million times in about a million different situations, but today somehow they have morphed into The Evil Ballet Flats of Razor Blades and Pain. I now have blisters on my right little toe, and on the back of both of my heels.
I still hate my Complex Organizations lecture. I can't wait until we get the evaluations for the course. "Dear Professor: your lectures made me want to self-harm."
Book Meme Days 04-07
Who wrote this meme? They seem to be asking the same question over and over again. I'll briefly touch on the next four days.
Day 04 - Your favorite book or series ever
My favorite book is A Room With a View by E.M. Forster. It's hard to say that it's my absolute most favoritest book ever because I like a lot of books, but I've adored it since I first read it in high school, and have re-read it about a dozen times since. I love what it says about relationships between men and women.
There's a quote by George spoken to Lucy that almost exactly sums up the kind of relationship I'm looking for. "I want you to have your own thoughts even as I hold you in my arms." I want someone to say that to me, and mean it.
Day 05 - A book or series you hate
This is going to be a controversial answer, and is really going to piss off most of my flist. (Let's be honest: it's going to piss off most of the world.) *ahem* Harry Potter.
I don't really hate it, because I haven't read it. I tend not to read things I don't like (even if they're assigned in a class...oops), so I can't really come up with a book series that I can say I didn't like for an objective reason. I don't like Harry Potter because the rest of the world is mad for it, and I don't get it, and I'm left just standing off to the side thinking, "Ok guys, um...can we talk about something else yet?"
Day 06 - Favorite book of your favorite series OR your favorite book of all time
Am I on drugs, or is this not almost exactly the same as Day 04? Are there different definitions of "ever" and "of all time"?
Day 07 - Least favorite plot device employed by way too many books you actually enjoyed otherwise
Deus ex machina. It happens at the end of Lord of the Flies (one of my favorite books of ever/all time) when the military shows up to rescue Ralph from the savage boys. It happens in the Lord of the Rings trilogy: Gwaihir and the other Eagles show up at some awfully convenient times.
It's frustrating when something unexpected and previously unrelated to the story swoops in to save the day. And yet I still love these books.

evilhippo? Any other suggestions? Could I steal the ones you already gave me?)

Date: 2010-09-16 01:08 am (UTC)I think I own a pair of these, actually...
...and in other news, I am beyond relieved to know I am not, in fact, the only person on LJ who has not read Harry Potter. (seriously, I was beginning to wonder) Like you said, I just don't really get it.

Date: 2010-09-16 01:22 am (UTC)There especially seems to be a lot of overlap between the Potter fandom and Doctor Who and other sci-fi shows, so yeah, we are in an awkward spot!

Date: 2010-09-16 04:10 am (UTC)You're not the only one who isn't crazy about HP - I've read them all, but I never was as mad over them as everyone else. I'm impressed by J.K. Rowling's world building, but the story itself, not so much. (I mean, why doesn't Voldemort just hire a Muggle to kill Harry while he's at home for the summer? PROBLEM SOLVED.)

Date: 2010-09-16 04:19 am (UTC)I have seen the movie--a teacher showed it to us in high school, and I re-watched it a couple years ago with a friend. It's really good, and very true to the book! If the BBC would re-make it as a mini-series with super hot actors in the roles, I would be oh so happy!

I think I understood some of those words...

I feel that way about 75% of the books I read! If only...

Date: 2010-09-16 04:47 am (UTC)Edit: And now I see that you already posted! And you've precluded me from using Why Does the Sun Shine. Darn you! The one song that would overlap! I guess I'll have to choose another TMBG song having to do with space. (-;

Date: 2010-09-16 02:35 pm (UTC)That is a really weird coincidence that we both wanted to use that TMBG song. Great minds, and such. Sorry!

Date: 2010-09-16 11:14 am (UTC)I'm not a massive HP fan either. I do own some of the books. I have read them all a couple of times over. I find aspects of the 'world' intriguing, but the plots are quite repetitive in terms of where they head. Inevitably, the books end with some sort of show down with Voldemort, and as decently written as they are, it would be nice for a little variation. I also LOATHED the Epilogue that was tagged onto the end of The Deathly Hallows. It felt like she had just slapped it on the end. It just jarred so badly.
