So, I'm in a quandary about whether or not to go all prissypants about Jennifer Garner playing Miss Marple.

PROS

• Agatha Christie on the screen for me to enjoy.
  
• Jennifer Garner is adorable.

CONS

• THE WHOLE POINT OF THE MISS MARPLE CHARACTER IS THAT SHE'S A GOSSIPY OLD SPINSTER!
  
• Disney. Blech.

Also potentially influencing my opinion: several British newspapers have already gone and decided to go Full Prissypants and condemn the decision. In the end, will they irritate me more than whomever is eventually cast to play the sassy young Marple's love interest?

Anyone want to influence me one way or the other?

ETA: In the interests of full disclosure, and as a shocking illustration of my own biases, I would like to state for the record that I FULLY APPROVE of hiring some Hot Young Thing to play an updated version of Poirot. But who should it be? Hmm...

I am not certain that I approve of such a radical change to the character, but I think that Jennifer Garner will do a good job with the role. She's got a lot of class, and I think she will redeem the role at least somewhat.

Hmm, I have a funny feeing someone went - oh, look at that BBC Sherlock Holmes reimagining, didn't that do well? I wonder what other iconic British sleuth we could do this to?

The funny thing is, I think they'd get away with Poirot, but an integral part of Marple's character was that she had a lifetime's experience studying human nature and that was her deductive strength.

Also, we so rarely see strong female leading characters over the age of fifty on our screens, while we have plenty of is young female leads - well, relatively.

I do like Jennifer Garner! I think if it were almost any other young Hollywood actress, my decision would be made for me.

Yes! I was rather facetious in my post, but I agree wholeheartedly with both your points. Miss Marple's age is such an integral part of her character, I just wonder: what is she without it? She has no training but life experience, as you said. I also agree on the point of there being a shortage of meaty roles for women over 50. I can think of plenty of actresses who would be perfect in the role.

I think my biggest fear is that I will like her in the role, and that will mean betraying the ideals that make me want to object her casting in the first place.

I want someone named Matthew to play Poirot. I will take last names 'Goode' or 'Smith'. Purely because I imagine he would be not fat, because then it would be hard to remember that he's basically Sherlock Holmes with an accent, right?

If we're having a slightly weighty Poirot, James McAvoy always looks pretty when he's a little soft around the edges. (No, I don't have a head-catalogue of attractive British actors, what makes you ask?)

I couldn't give a stuff about Marple because I have my Marple already, and feel no need to have a new one. Also, Disney was cool when it made cartoons. Not so much any more.

I'm well...I can't really complain. I haven't been around online so much lately, which: I do notice you haven't been either! Also, we've sort of falling down in our Lent Buddy duties, haven't we? I'm still not eating sweets, though I did slip up and have some ginger snaps when my tummy was upset.

Ooh, I like the idea of James McAvoy as Poirot! Good call. (I am rubbish when it comes to fancying hot young actors. Also, I spend far too much time consuming British media, as I can find no acceptable way to express the previous sentiment without copious use of Britishisms.)

Who is your Marple? The only one I've really experienced is June Whitfield in the radio dramas. (Which, BTW: she is fantastic in that role! Why can't she be in the Disney movie version?!)

I was sort of like, "Well, I guess Jennifer Garner/whole thing getting revamped to fit could be interesting," but then I saw a TIME snipper that noted, "If they wanted a hot Miss Marple, why didn't they cast Helen Mirren?", and now I am just disappoint. :<

Hell yeah Hellen Mirren! DAMN IT! I finally get new Agatha Christie to enjoy, and it is RUINED!

Overall I like Jennifer Garner, but I think I've gotta come down on the side of DNW! >:(
