In garden news: I finally have little baby watermelons on my vines! I've been able to spot two so far, only slightly bigger than a jellybean, and that makes me very happy! Also making me happy are the seven pumpkins I have growing that are now about 1-2 lbs. each. While I am melting in the heat, the veggies are diggin' it, and all the plants are just full of new growth. Here's some gratuitous veggie pics:

(They look big, but the little paper 'lanterns' growing on the plant are basically empty and the tomatillos themselves are still tiny!)

(See those white spots on the leaves? That's powdery mildew. It looks like nothing now, but if it spreads, it can completely COAT all the leaves and stress the plants. IT MUST BE KILLED WITH FIRE, except it can't be killed with fire, so it is merely being suppressed with milk spray at the mo...)








Things I am NOT happy about, gardenwise: the mildew, my arch-nemesis. END ROT! Ok, so I have seven pumpkins growing nicely, but none of the new little baby pumpkins are making it! They're rotting and falling off the vine before they get bigger than golfball-sized. It is epic sad! :( Various other forms of fungal wilt are striking my nutmeg melons (which otherwise have adorable little fuzzy fruits on them!) and the cucumbers. Everday I am ripping out a few feet of vine that have given up on life. And this FRIGGIN' HUMIDITY is torture!

Also also: more people need to play my game with me! It works thusly:

• You give me the name of a color or an emotion.
  
• I give you something that reminds me of or represents that color or emotion: a picture, a quote, a drabble, etc.
  
• I give you a color or emotion, and then you do the same!

And...go!

Also: YAY WATERMELON. I love watermelon so hard. When it was super hot here a couple of weeks ago I ate a ton. Now it's chilly so watermelon seems less enticing.

Thanks, love! I swear, my flist is so kind for putting up with all of the pictures of vegetables I post... What can I say? It's my summer obsession!

I love watermelon, too! We're in the middle of our own heat wave right now, and nothing tastes better than a big, sweet chunk of watermelon! I just hope mine get a proper chance to ripen before the summer's over. And that they don't start rotting away like the baby pumpkins!

I am most fascinated by tomatillos. We don't really have them here, but I assume from my River Cottage learnings that they're a lot like very small tomatoes? (As the name suggests). But the pretty part is the leafy bit, I think. They look so cute when they're open and they have an adorable head of papery leaves. I am jealous.

Err, also, emotion: unfettered joy.

Today I had to coat all my chilli plantswith soapy water to get rid of the bloody green fly, who I had previously thought I had defeated but apparently not. They actually managed to totally dry out my basil plant too. Wretches. I still have powdery mildew on the lemon balm too because considering it lives inside with me and the weather is hot I decided to forgo the milk spray as I doubt I could live with the smell.

I like your veggie posts personally. Its nice to find someone else who finds baby plants cute. And yours are very cute!
