Anthropomorphobia:

Just a quick poll before I run off to work! Inspired by a gif someone posted on a friending meme and on a discussion thread elsewhere.

I have a general squick of anthropomorphism: assigning human qualities to animals and, occasionally, inanimate objects. How crazy am I? ("VERY!")

[Poll #1705746]

Mostly it's not a question of tolerable or creepy. I find animals used in films, especially those that talk, just plain annoying. The exception was Babe - I loved that film.

You're a weird one, aren't you? ♥

:P

(If you're only just now noticing, I've been doing a better job of playing at 'normal' than I thought!)

For me, it mostly depends on context. I love Dugg in "Up," and any sort of plushie/puppet made of fabric tends to be cute to me. But if there's an attempt at total realism, there's a disconnect where I find things creepy. Thus I am one of the only musical theater lovers in the world to really hate "Cats".

[identity profile] alt_universe_me.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, my gf loves musical theater, and she hates 'Cats' too. (I've never seen it, and thus have no opinion)

[identity profile] apple-pathways.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, so we have a gf now... *grins like a lunatic*

[identity profile] alt_universe_me.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Haha...yeah :D She's wonderful and lovely and wayyyyyy too good for me :) I'm not really trying to broadcast my relationship though, since I have absolutely no idea where it's going at this point.

[identity profile] apple-pathways.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
No worries...I'm just happy for you! The last I remember, you were all nervous about having a date. I'll keep it hush hush after this last little bit of gushing. :D

[identity profile] alt_universe_me.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, well, it's not exactly a secret. I just don't want to make a big post about it on my journal or anything. Talking one-on-one is totally cool :)

Yeah...nervous...that's me! I'm still trying to figure out a lot of things. And, she's been out since she was a teen--she's 22 now. AND OMG IT'S SO WEIRD FOR ME TO DATE A YOUNGER WOMAN. ALSO I ALWAYS FORGET SHE'S YOUNGER BECAUSE SHE ACTS SO MUCH MORE MATURE THAN ME AND SHE TELLS ME I HAVE A BABYFACE AND AND...

hahaha sorry...yeah, things are pretty good though, all things considered *g*

[identity profile] apple-pathways.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Things sound great! Honestly, you have me grinning like a fool here. You're such a sweetheart, it's just endearing to see you so happy. :D

I am always TERRIFIED when I start something with someone new! I have to fight the urge to ask them: "Just where do you see this going and on a scale of 1-10 how much do you like me?" on the second date. :P

And you know what: good for you for nabbing a younger woman! When I was 22, I was dating a 31 year old, so... :D

[identity profile] alt_universe_me.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
:D Thanks! And, well, I don't really have any expectations for this relationship right now.

Aw, I think we all have that inner monologue of being terrified. Or at least a lot of us do *g*

Ha, I'm usually the younger one. It's a little strange for me to be 25--where has all the time gone? LOL.

[identity profile] apple-pathways.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Cats" is something I just cannot tolerate...the costumes are just too squicky for me! The idea of talking to someone while dressed in that getup is giving me goosebumps... *shivers*

[identity profile] alt_universe_me.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, man. Oh, man. This is like...it depends! Sometimes it can be cute, and sometimes tolerable, and in rare instances for me, creepy. I think talking animals in cartoons is the thing that I don't think I've ever found creepy. People in animal costumes I don't find cute, but hey, if they want to dress up, then that's fine for them I guess *g*

[identity profile] apple-pathways.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm usually fine with talking animals in cartoons! I watched the same shows/movies most people did as kids. I have a very high tolerance for animals in cartoons! (Except, have you ever seen the animated movie for Orwell's Animal Farm? That...is kinda creepy to me!)

I don't have a problem with people dressing in animal costumes...they just make me intensely uncomfortable.

[identity profile] ladylovelace.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to tack on to the above comment on it being more annoying/tolerable to me rather than cute/creepy/tolerable.

But then again, I am all for anthropomorphism in general. I think the little food things in the Wrigley's ad is adorable, for example (and know a couple of furries and borderline furries, so I suppose my worldview is a bit skewed from the usual human experience).

[identity profile] apple-pathways.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Anthropomorphised objects I generally find less creepy than animals.

Furries...I know they get hated on a lot, but honest to God my squick has nothing to do with them! My "whatever floats your boat" policy extends to them, as well, I just...cannot talk to people in animal costumes. (Well, I can...but I'm gonna act all weird about it. At least until my heart stops racing and the urge to flee subsides!)

[identity profile] hrymfaxe.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
ANTHROPOMORPHIA I HAVE IT.

Except with regards to the Muppets.

[identity profile] apple-pathways.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
THANK GOD I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE! ♥ Come right on in to my circle of weirdness!

And yes: the Muppets are exempt from my general dislike of puppets! They are awesome.

[identity profile] katyscarlett76.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know that I find it creepy but it's not something I seek out exactly. I find the animals in Disney cartoons cute (who doesn't love Thumper??) but I'm not so keen on the live action ones (I wasn't a fan of Babe for example).

[identity profile] apple-pathways.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm generally fine with movies--nearly across the board for animation, and with most live action. It depends on the storyline, and exactly how 'human' we're supposed to find the animals.

People in animal costumes? Just...no. NO!

(Thumper is absolutely adorable! ♥)

[identity profile] sabriel75.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on the writing and if I like the story for cartoons.

Hate costumed animal people.

Not fond of puppets all around but there have been some really cute ones that I haven't been able to resist.

[identity profile] apple-pathways.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Puppets! Puppets are bad.

Although, I can become desensitized to them! The puppets in Labyrinth are SUPER creepy, but I've seen that movie so many times--as a child and as an adult--that they don't bother me.

[identity profile] evilhippo.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with what a few other people have said: needs an "annoying" or "awkward" option. (Talking animals in live action: annoying. People in animal costumes: awkward.)

[identity profile] apple-pathways.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
True...I was thinking more of my own personal spectrum of experience, which generally runs from, "Ok, I can handle this" to "Dear GOD, what the fuck is that?"

[identity profile] evilhippo.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
No nuance at all? (-; Though come to think of it, most of my reactions to live action animals/puppets/people in animal suits bypass the thing itself and land on "What the heck were their motivations for this?" On the other hand, I end up judging most cartoon animals on their own merits for some reason.

[identity profile] apple-pathways.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to have the same reaction to stumbling upon people in animal costumes that most would have about finding a spider in their bathtub. I'd like to wonder "What the HELL were they thinking?", but usually my brain doesn't make it that far! :P

[identity profile] evilhippo.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, there we go. Now I have a point of reference. I was having trouble imagining the "Oh GOD no!" reaction, but now all I have to do is replace the man in a bear suit/CG animal atrocity with the giant roach I found in my bathtub at my old apartment. (-:

[identity profile] apple-pathways.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Roaches I can handle...they're very unlikely to try and hug you!

[identity profile] tierfal.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
…apparently I am just a tolerant person.

…or I like animals.

…or I need to stop marveling over the results of other people's LJ polls. XD

[identity profile] infinitejoys.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
LATE COMMENT IS LATE.

I said "tolerable" for the "people in animal costumes" option because on the one hand, there's a college kid dressed up as Mickey Mouse at Disney World, and on the other hand...there's furries.

But the recent trend in live action movies where they make the animal's mouth move along with the speech? CREEPS THE HELL OUT OF ME.

[identity profile] apple-pathways.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 02:03 am (UTC)(link)

*nods in enthusiastic agreement* All kinds of wrong, that is!

Also: MUPPETS! YAY! Some of the few puppets who get a pass from me. :D
