Fall is Creeping Up on Me

A couple weeks ago, I was driving home from work, and I thought to myself: it feels like fall. At first, I couldn't understand why I thought that, because the weather was 90 degrees and humid as hell, and all the trees and plants were still green (and brown from the heat).

Then I realized: it's the position of the sun. The northern hemisphere is on the downswing of its tilt, and we're going to be plunged back into winter soon.

So, here are some parting shots of the flower and herb gardens; there's not much left that's healthy and blooming, so I'll have to enjoy it while I can!

First: a beautiful peach-colored zinnia.

It's getting late, so no tables; just slappin' the pictures down here!

These are my favorite zinnias; the red really glows in the sunshine. (Though the day I took these was overcast, natch; it's Michigan, after all.)

red zinnias

Here are the same zinnias mixed in with some lighter orange ones.

This is a shot of my herb garden; I really love this lavender! You can also see in the background thyme, lemon grass, and lemon verbena.

Franny is less than impressed with my accomplishments as a gardener.

These red flowers are a cypress vine that re-seeded itself in the garden and grew up the legs of a container; pink zinnias in the background

Those Zinnia are gorgeous (imagine that was said in breathy appreciation). The peach one especially, I think, but I also love the orange.

Thank you! I think zinnias might be my favorite flower: easy to grow and of infinite variety.

Gorgeous garden and your cat, Franny, looks a lot like our cat Yuki. :D

Thank you very much! And yes, my dear kitty looks like many other cats. A couple years ago, when we lived elsewhere, I was walking to the bus when a gray tabby came up to me on the sidewalk, rolled on her back, and meowed. I thought, "Oh God, how did she not only escape the apartment, but manage to get ahead of me down the street?!"

Of course, it wasn't her, but it was eerie!

Aww, kitty! And those flowers are so pretty, I'm impressed. I have a total black thumb myself - I've killed every plant I have ever owned. Even cacti aren't safe from me. :)

Curiously enough, I can't keep houseplants alive, either. I don't know what it is.

I should point out I don't have sole responsibility for this garden; a lot of it is the result of years of hardwork on my mother's part. (Though I do most of the grunt work now...)

Those are some lovely zinnias! I'm so jealous of your backyard space. I didn't get a chance to plant much of anything in this year, so I just have some herbs in pots on my back porch, and a few morning glories that decided to take up residence along with them.

This is one of the great benefits of moving back to the 'burbs for awhile with the parents.

The disadvantages are a whole 'nother story.

Herbs are my favorite! So low-maintenance and useful.
