Baby Pictures and Other Emblems of Spring

It's beginning: that time of year where I bore my flist with endless garden shots! I'll start off the season with a peek at the seedlings I have started in my basement.

The first three pictures were taken with my iPhone. The last five were taken with my mother's new fancy-schmancy camera that has a macro lens and whatnot. At some point during the photo shoot, I managed to change the proportions of the picture size, so...yeah.

And as a reward for looking at my boring seedling photos, some spring icons:

Ooh yay plants!

Ahh this makes me happy. And also reminds me that I need to start my window garden.

Oh my goodness a snail! I love snails! I think they are the cutest things (even if I don't want them eating my veggies). Thank you so much :D

You're welcome! I thought he was so cute, even though: YES, STAY AWAY FROM MY GARDEN!!! :P

Good luck with your window boxes!

[identity profile] inkdancer.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It's less of a window box and more of a... well, actually it is a metal bucket that will be sitting inside my window because I'm terrified that if it goes outside, the landscapers will destroy it. They already over-trimmed my azaleas, and ran over a rosebush with a lawnmower. Unfortunately the neighborhood hired them, not me, so I can't fire them for ruining my plants.

*shakes fist at plant-ruining landscapers*

So what will you grow in your bucket?

[identity profile] inkdancer.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I am growing beefsteak tomatoes, cilantro, and cayenne peppers. I started them this afternoon and now my bedroom smells pleasantly of wet dirt. Hopefully this summer I will have delicious homemade salsa! (I'm going to transplant the tomatoes and peppers outside after there is no risk of the landscapers mistaking them for weeds.)

Mmm, I love cilantro! But I don't know if I'll try to grow it again: it bolts too quickly in the hot weather.

I will expect pics later in the season!

[identity profile] inkdancer.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously... I could keep cilantro around just for the sake of smelling it all the time. I hope that by keeping the cilantro indoors it will do well in spite of the heat.

There will definitely be pics. At the moment it would be boring, just a little metal bucket in my window.

I've let it go to seed and harvested the seeds (coriander) before, but honestly: for all the trouble it was, I can buy coriander for cheap! (And you're talking to someone who is OBSESSED with growing/making things herself! So...yeah. Bit of a hassle!)

Hmm, let me know how it does indoors! I'm tempted to try it that was myself... (Or maybe just a little pot of it on the back patio. It's just SO YUMMY!)

Gah I did not think pictures were boring... I love seeing all the green & growing stuff. Pumpkins?

The photos and icons make me seriously consider encouraging SO to do potted veggies again this year. It's hard to see all the mess and dirt and bugs in those icons.

[identity profile] apple-pathways.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, pumpkins! And acorn squash, three kinds of melons, a leaf broccoli, tomatoes...hmm, I think that's all I've started so far.

Home-grown veggies are the BEST! (But yes, the work does get overwhelming about halfway through the season!)

I CANNOT WAIT. FOR SPRING.

I went out to the garden the other day hoping to see a sprig or two of SOMETHING. But no, nada.

You're so organized doing the whole basement seedling thing---do you have super-duper grow lights set up? *jealous*

[identity profile] apple-pathways.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I saw a few little shoots poking their heads above the dirt last Sunday, but they'd already been damaged by frost! (And nibbled at by woodchucks. :P)

I don't know if they're super-duper, but I do have grow lights! It's a major operation. ;)

Tomorrow is APRIL! FOR JOY! There will be growing things SOON! :D

Oh, I am so glad it's finally getting to be spring! Before much longer everything's going to be green and blooming and really, it can't come soon enough. I admire your dedication to your gardening...unfortunately I have a total black thumb, I could probably make a fake plant wilt if I had it long enough. :)

Those icons are so pretty and colorful! I may have to steal a few.

[identity profile] apple-pathways.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
The icons are there to be stolen! (Actually, I made a couple more I need to upload...maybe I'll do that in a minute.)

Gardening is one of my eleventy-dozen hobbies. To be honest, I need fewer avocations and more...vocations. :P

Your bbs are super-cute! :D I'm not sure what it is that makes seedlings somehow adorable despite their being, y'know… plants. XD

The icons are very pretty, too. :D

Thank you! I can't wait until I can get at my garden plot. WHY MUST MICHIGAN HAVE SUCH LATE FROSTS?!? (Don't even talk to me about latitude and whatnot! WITCHCRAFT, I say! :P)
