Christmas day is in our grasp, so long as we have hands to clasp.
The battle rages on! I sent
evilhippo a special music battle challenge to come up with a list of her top five Christmas/holiday songs; I had no idea it was going to be as hard on her as it was! For an account of just HOW hard, here's the telling of her struggle at her journal. I think you'll be quite surprised as to what she came up with!
As for me, I had trouble with this challenge for the opposite reason: I love Christmas music, and whittling my choices down to five was HARD! Suffice to say, there are many, MANY more favorites left off this list, but what I ended up with is a nice little playlist celebrating both the fun, and the sentiment of the holiday.
It starts off, appropriately enough, with "Welcome Christmas" from How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and then moves on to "Christmas is Coming" from A Charlie Brown Christmas. These are my two favorite Christmas specials, and the idea that there could be possibly be any other choice to rival their supremacy is simply not up for debate. (Don't even start with that "Frosty the Snowman" "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" nonsense! Like puppets and people in costume, stop motion animation is CREEPY. Why yes, I did have a strange and traumatic childhood, why do you ask?)
After that bit of childhood nostalgia, comes a nice, jazzy rendition of "We Three Kings" sung by Ella Fitzgerald. I love the song, and the break for the chorus, and Ella's voice is always welcome on any mix.
Next up, Feist with her singing of "Lo, How a Rose e'er Blooming." Her voice and the instrumentation on this track are just gorgeous.
Finally, the list ends with "When the River Meets the Sea" by John Denver and the Muppets on A Christmas Together. If I wanted to list my favorite Christmas songs, I really could have just named this entire album: it's fun, uplifting, sentimental, hilarious, and heart-breaking all in one album! If you haven't heard it, do yourself a favor and DO! This song legit made me cry when I was composing this list. It always does.
SPECIAL BONUS TRACK!
Everyone should have "Dominick The Italian Christmas Donkey" in their lives, if only for the fun of being caught singing the chorus to yourself in public. This version comes to you courtesy of New York's PS22 Chorus, a group first introduced to me by the lovely
planejane.
It stars the most adorable donkey named Mohamed you will ever hope to meet!
