[livejournal.com profile] pulped_fictions, a community for writers of original fiction, is running a summer event to coincide with the Olympics! I was in on the brainstorming, and let me assure you: it looks like lots of fun. :D

If you have lofty goals of putting out a pile of words this summer, there's a marathon event to keep you inspired! Less time? Well, the Heptathlon is composed of seven smaller challenges, all of which can be completed in just a little of your spare time. (Also: only participate in those challenges which interest you!)

Fairy Tale Bending is open at [livejournal.com profile] pulped_fictions, and cards have gone out. I made 54 individual cards, y'all. I'm really excited with how they turned out!

If you're participating in the challenge, you'll probably remember my card as the example posted on the sign-ups:

Hmm, now--what do I want to do with it?

Find your wackily ever after at [livejournal.com profile] pulped_fictions

Who wants to come and play this new challenge I cooked up with [livejournal.com profile] ladybracknell? The format is similar to Kink (or Schmoop) Bingo. You'll get a card (peek under the cut!) containing 25 fairy tale prompts--themes, tropes, characters, settings, and stories common to fairy tales.

Oh wow, I missed you all! How is everyone? Any exciting weekend plans?

Nothing much on my part. I've submitted my first original story for publication, so that's out of the way! (I don't have my hopes up for getting published, but it was nice to break the ice, right?)

The rest of this weekend, I need to finish all the music mixes I signed up for, and slap some polish on my [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon entry. (At least it's written! It...doesn't go anywhere...but it's written!)

I've got my two entries for [livejournal.com profile] sherlockmas's Summer of Sherlock done and emailed to Rachel. (I am kind of wondering who the hell I am anymore, finishing all of this stuff ahead of deadlines...I think I have the chatroom to thank!)

So how's tricks? Wanna link me to something fun/funny since I don't have much going on this weekend?

ETA: For interest, and my own reference, here's the prompts I'm working on the for the music mix exchange: Read more... )

(You know when I start using Phish lyrics to title my entries, I have nothing in particular to talk about.)

First, the business!
  • It seems I have set a goal of finishing 1,000 words of my [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon fic by tomorrow. What time tomorrow: I am not sure. Number of words I have written so far: 0. Who wants to write with me tonight?!
  • Going to the SPLASH PARK with my friend, her adorable two year-old, another friend and her friend and her adorable four year-old TOMORROW. There will be a water slide. HELLZ YEAH!
  • I will be making my foreign language post for that 15 Day meme I never finished this weekend. I promise.
  • I picked the first major harvest from my garden today! Two heads of Chinese cabbage, a bunch of swiss chard, a lovely yellow squash, a yellow Hungarian pepper, and one little mini cucumber that fell off the vine while I was messing with it.
BEHOLD: Vegetable goodness! )

I also seem to have picked up another meme from somewhere [livejournal.com profile] lemniciate. This one is about my journal. Read more... )

Last but not least:

BLECH!

apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (WTF)
One of my students puked today, and guess who got to clean it up? I'll spare you all the disgusting details, but let me assure you: they are disgusting and they are very detailed.

I'll tell ya, it really puts things into perspective: any day you don't have to clean up vomit is a pretty damn good day. Conversely, today...

Anyway. I need to start writing something again. Since waiting for inspiration to strike seems to be a bust, I've decided it would be best to force myself to work on something. And why not let my flist arbitrarily decide what that something should be? So, here it is: ANOTHER POLL! Oh, how I spoil you all...

I call SHENANIGANS! )

[Poll #1743031]
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Omelette)
The first entry for [livejournal.com profile] originalfic_las was due today, and I used my first skip. I just couldn't come up with anything! I promise, though, I will do better in the future. Promise.

In the meantime, I will be voting in this round, and you should, too! There are many good reasons to do so, not the least of which is all the AWESOME WARNINGS posted with the fic!

My attention was drawn to the warnings by the lovely [livejournal.com profile] ladylovelace when she pointed out that one author chose to warn for: "a little language, gays (no slash)." GAYS! The author warned for GAYS! I'll have to lodge a complaint as soon as I finish laughing my ass off.

Here are some examples of the other high quality warnings on offer:

Mild innuendo
body horror
brief mention of drug lab
f/f relationships (if not your cup of tea, apologies)
The word 'shit'
hints at a male/male relationship
implied death
Adultery

I'm sure most of these people are well-meaning and just trying to be safe rather than sorry, but seriously: what word do these people live in that they really think someone is going to be shocked and appalled at "mild innuendo"??? Haven't they ever been--oh, I don't know--on THE INTERNET before? There's a lot more than innuendo out there.

And what is 'body horror'? Is it one of those "if you have to ask, you don't want to know" type of things?

TWO MORE people warned for "teh gayz".

LOL at warning for "the word 'shit'". (But did they warn for the warning???)

We now have to warn for even the MENTION of death?

And adultery? Really?

Ay yi yi!

The Rules: Don't take too long to think about it. Fifteen writers whose works you connect to, read over and over, quote from constantly or just plain worship. List the first fifteen you can recall in no more than fifteen minutes. Tag fifteen friends, including me, because I'm interested in seeing what writers my friends choose. If you'd like to participate, please do, as I love any opportunity to talk about books, authors, and poets!

The List:

  1. Neil Gaiman
  2. Robert Frost
  3. Jane Austen
  4. E.M. Forster
  5. William Shakespeare
  6. Margaret Atwood
  7. Marion Zimmer Bradley
  8. Arthur Conan Doyle
  9. Agatha Christie
  10. Pablo Neruda

Brief commentary on my choices behind the cut. )

In other news, I AM GOING TO SEE LCD SOUNDSYSTEM! *happy dances* Then Carolina Chocolate Drops in December. Woo hoo concerts!
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Typewriter)
Because I COULD NOT RESIST requesting the Amy/Rory story I've always wanted from [livejournal.com profile] housemaid79, I have gotten myself into this:

The first TEN people to comment in this post get to request that I write a drabble of any pairing/character of their choosing (and a prompt, please). In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level. (If you absolutely can't write, maybe find a creative alternative?)

I have a limited knowledge of fandoms, but I'll try my best for whatever you want to prompt. Have at it, folks!

apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Typewriter)
So, [livejournal.com profile] originalfic_las, a Last Author Standing competition for writers of original fiction, has started. The prompt for the first challenge is "change". I was hoping for something a little more detailed, but I can work with this. I'm getting a few ideas rattling around my brain, I'm just waiting for them the gel into something writable.

ETA: I meant to mention that if you wanted to sign up for this challenge, you still have until Wednesday to do so!

I just want to make it through the first few rounds, get some idea of where I stand and what I'm up against, and then who knows? I'll blunt my ambitions until I have a better feel for the competition.

I know a couple folks from my flist (like lovely [livejournal.com profile] ladylovelace) are signed up for the competition--holla back if you're one of them so we can commisserate and cheer each other on!

I'm also in the midst of writing something for [livejournal.com profile] she_is_to_me's latest challenge. It's an AU challenge, and I'm REALLY excited about my idea, but I still don't know exactly where I'm going with the story. I also have to write my entry for the dark!fic challenge at [livejournal.com profile] thegameison_sh. It's amazing how these commitments tend to snowball, isn't it?

And now, in honor of National Coming Out Day (October 11 in the US, 12 October in the UK), here is my coming out story:

Re-posted in a cleaned-up version from my old Livejournal )
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Fanfic Nerd)
I present you with homework!

Since so many of you expressed interest in researching slash fiction as a sociological phenomenon, I present you here with a reading list of sources I found online. Unfortunately, I can't use any of them for my assignment, because they don't come from academic, peer-reviewed journals, but they all seem very interesting.

I found all of these articles through Google scholar, and I would point anyone interested in researching further in that direction. (You will have to pay for certain articles, but all of those I've listed below are accessible for free.)

I haven't read any of them yet, because I am supposedly working on my actual research assignment.

So, here we go:

Queering cyberspace : fan fiction communities as Ssaces for expressing and exploring sexuality: this is a PDF file of a book chapter.

Inventing a universe: Reading and writing internet fan fiction : a link to a graduate dissertation. On fanfiction. Yep.

Slashing Harry Potter: a special present for all the Potter fans on my flist to make up for me dissing it. Don't let the fact that the abstract is in German dissuade you; once you click on the PDF file, the article is in English.

And finally:
Queering Popular Culture: Female Spectators and the Appeal of Writing Slash Fan Fiction: this one took a bit of sleuthing to track down. I'd seen it cited on several other works, but it took me forever to find it. My gift to you! I can't wait to read it, this is exactly the sort of research I was looking for.

Enjoy, my nerdy little slash friends!
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Omelette)

  • Writer's block is a bitch.
  • My ass hurts. (The parking on campus sucks, and there is no finding a spot where I don't have a 15 minute uphill walk to class. I'm not really complaining about the walk, since I need the exercise, but the boots I was wearing have worked ass muscles that were not ready for the wakeup call they got.)
  • The financial aid office is pissing me off. Any OTHER hoops I have to jump through to get my loan before you pile on ANOTHER late fee?
  • I seem to have arranged a dinner party that features three happy couples, and ME! The single friend! (I hope to God my only single friend that lives in the area is going to be free that night.)
  • Along those lines, I may have a date soon! (We're working out details.) His name is Jeremy, and he's in social work. (There are men in social work?! GET THE FUCK OUT!)
  • I love how slow work is right now; I don't ever have more than three students at a time. It's GLORIOUS! My bosses are freaking out, though; that's not so good.
  • I forgot my keys to the building and had to call my boss to let me in. *facepalm*
  • Other than my keys, I keep feeling like I'm forgetting something, ALL THE TIME. I may be losing my mind. (Again.)

So, how are y'all???

I've decided to edit this entry rather than create a new one, because I just found a 30 Day Book Meme on [livejournal.com profile] rewindclunkplay's journal and...BOOKS! You guys know I have to do this, right?

Enable me... )

delicious boots

Note to self: you are not allowed to buy cowboy boots. You do not, in the strictest sense of the word, need cowboy boots. You have to buy books for school, and gas for the car so you can get to school and also to your job so that you can buy more books and gas. It doesn't matter that they're on sale and quite a good price and they actually have your size and OMG LOOK HOW GORGEOUS THEY ARE! None of that. Now put your debit card away, and move on.

Ahem.

So anyway, for the first time in a long time, I have an idea for an original (not fanfic) story. The more I think about it, the more I'm falling in love with the idea, but I'm a bit nervous about starting it for a couple of reasons:
