[livejournal.com profile] pulped_fictions, a community for writers of original fiction, is running a summer event to coincide with the Olympics! I was in on the brainstorming, and let me assure you: it looks like lots of fun. :D

If you have lofty goals of putting out a pile of words this summer, there's a marathon event to keep you inspired! Less time? Well, the Heptathlon is composed of seven smaller challenges, all of which can be completed in just a little of your spare time. (Also: only participate in those challenges which interest you!)

Jul. 17th, 2012 12:12 pm
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Black Swan - Natalie close up)
Just in case you're not following my writing journal, The Splendour of a Sudden Thought, or following me on Twitter (@Amy Gaertner) :P...

I'm doing my first "blog tour" this week, and have guest posts scheduled on three different websites! The first two are already up:

"Examining Friends with Benefits", @ More Than This: Menage and Polyamory Reviews.

Beyond the Standard Options: Representing Bisexuals in Fiction, @ Bending the Bookshelf.

Want to continue the discussion? I'm game!
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Good Books)
Please let me recommend to you Cecilia Ryan, as an author and general person to watch. She bleeds romance from her proverbial (virtual?) pen, and her new novel looks just as intricate, poignant, and compelling as ever.

Winding Road

by Cecilia Ryan
(click the banner to visit her on GoodReads)
Winding Road cover, hand and guitar fret.

Winding Road is a romance and coming of age story for Ash, a young musician with a band that's just starting to make a name for itself and a huge crush on a fellow musician, the mysterious Indigo. As his music career takes off, so does his love life, sending him on an emotional rollercoaster ride that's all part of growing up. With a little help from his friends, Ash navigates the brave new world of semi-stardom and, just maybe, finds a little happiness with the man of his dreams.
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Zombie five!)
I feel so accomplished today. I cleaned and vacuumed my bedroom, did laundry, spent an hour and a half on the phone and the internet figuring out my student loan situation, finished adding all the new zombie prompts to the database, and pimped [livejournal.com profile] zombi_fic_ation out to a couple comms. (I also showered, but never mind! Now I'm just bragging. :P)

Last item on my agenda before I head off to tutor: pimp the zombie prompts that MUST BE WRITTEN!

First, have a banner: click it to add your own prompts to the fest!

And now: THESE PROMPTS NEED HOMES! Won't you lend a hand? List of prompts I'm dying to see filled: )

Want to fill one of these prompts? Mark your calendar for Monday, April 23 when prompt claiming opens.

Want to add an idea for your fandom? Get thee to the prompt post!

Running a ZOMBIE FIC FEST with [livejournal.com profile] kel_reiley: multi-fandom, and original fiction, too. Anybody have any ideas for where to pimp this thing? And if you're willing to help promote, please snag a banner from behind the cut: THE CUT )
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Hunger Games - Katniss (Betting On You))

I'm warning everyone now: if Katniss/Haymitch becomes a thing, there will be much sulking and gnashing of the teeth going on in the vicinity of this journal!
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Ghostbusters - Who You Gonna Call?)
So, I had a minor freak-out today and switched my journal over to "Friends Only" and locked down all my previously-public entries. Why did I do that? IDEFK. There were maybe one or two entries I hadn't locked that, in retrospect, I maybe should have, and for some reason I assumed there were TONS MORE, and since now I'm Twittering and Pinteresting and whatever-elsing all over the place, and people are starting to connect the dots between my various usernames I flew into DAMAGE CONTROL MODE and just locked the whole place down. I figured I'd lock it all, and then just unlock the stuff I want public.

Turns out something like 99% of my entries are perfectly fine for consumption by the general public, and the other 1% are TL;DR emotional freak-outs and/or me bitching about specific people in my life that don't really deserve to find out about it. (ALSO turns out that locking things down en masse is a whole hell of a lot easier than selectively unlocking entries.)

What does this mean for you, Gentle Reader? Um, well: bear with me and my crazy as I figure shit out and get this journal together. I've unlocked all my fic and recent memes and things, but if you come across something that's locked would like me to unlock it, let me know.

(Have I mentioned how exhausting it is being crazy? I mean: I can't even be consistently crazy. That would be fine! Instead, I have to be tormented by these ridiculous moments of sane reasoning. Pff, who needs it?!)

In other news: ICONS.

Right here! )

Are you on Twitter? I am totally on Twitter. (Though I do have a sneaking suspicion that I am Doing It Wrong.) Want to follow me? I am @AmyGaertner.

I'm also on Pinterest! Is anyone else on Pinterest? Check me out here: http://pinterest.com/amygaertner/ I have 3 boards: one Who-related, one for tagging public domain images I find around the interwebs, and one for stuff I just think is pretty. (Guess which pins of mine get re-pinned the most? Go on: guess!)

If you have an iPhone, I'm on Instagram as well. My username is amoamare.

OH! And if you have recommendations for people/boards/whatever to follow on said services, lay 'em on me!

Who wants to come and play this new challenge I cooked up with [livejournal.com profile] ladybracknell? The format is similar to Kink (or Schmoop) Bingo. You'll get a card (peek under the cut!) containing 25 fairy tale prompts--themes, tropes, characters, settings, and stories common to fairy tales.

Sample card: )

[livejournal.com profile] pulped_fictions is a members-only closed community for writers and artists of original works. If you're not a member and would like to play, get in touch and I'll recommend you for membership!
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Magenta (Rocky Horror))
First and foremost, BUT THIS BOOK:

It contains a story written by none other than the fantastically talented [livejournal.com profile] ladylovelace and is available in both paperback and Kindle form.

In garden news: I finally have little baby watermelons on my vines! I've been able to spot two so far, only slightly bigger than a jellybean, and that makes me very happy! Also making me happy are the seven pumpkins I have growing that are now about 1-2 lbs. each. While I am melting in the heat, the veggies are diggin' it, and all the plants are just full of new growth. Here's some gratuitous veggie pics: Read more... )

Things I am NOT happy about, gardenwise: the mildew, my arch-nemesis. END ROT! Ok, so I have seven pumpkins growing nicely, but none of the new little baby pumpkins are making it! They're rotting and falling off the vine before they get bigger than golfball-sized. It is epic sad! :( Various other forms of fungal wilt are striking my nutmeg melons (which otherwise have adorable little fuzzy fruits on them!) and the cucumbers. Everday I am ripping out a few feet of vine that have given up on life. And this FRIGGIN' HUMIDITY is torture!

Also also: more people need to play my game with me! It works thusly:
  • You give me the name of a color or an emotion.
  • I give you something that reminds me of or represents that color or emotion: a picture, a quote, a drabble, etc.
  • I give you a color or emotion, and then you do the same!

And...go!

Some very good prompts already made over here:

mixtape exchange

But please click the banner and make some more, because I need more friendly faces to squee with! You're all going to have to hear about my mixes anyway, so why not jump in and prompt/make some yourself!

([livejournal.com profile] evilhippo: There is someone over there using your flash-y Tab icon and making Homestuck prompts. I got so excited when I thought it was you...and then the letdown. :( Boo!)
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Bad Music (Life's Too Short))
This is such a great idea, I am kicking myself for not thinking of it first! I have to ponder out my prompts, but then I am all over this thing!

You make a prompt, someone claims it, and then you get a lovely mix of songs to enjoy! Prompts can be fandom-specific, general, original, a quote, a song, etc... GO AND HAVE FUN!

apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Adorable Watson + Sherlock)
Thanks to everyone who offered an opinion on which name to choose. In the end, my all-wise all-knowing co-mod Miss [livejournal.com profile] rachel2205 picked "Spring into Sherlock" as it most neatly captures the two elements we wanted to get across in our title: 'spring' and 'Sherlock'!

So I have created an incredibly-bright and (I hope) altogether eye-catching banner to spread the love! If you'd like to promote the fest to the Sherlock fans on your flist *hopeful smile* I've provided the banner code below!

(Oh, and if you're a member of [livejournal.com profile] thegameison_sh: I'll promote this in the Team Sherlock comm, but if you're on another team and would be willing to share this banner on your team comm...)

(Look how happy he is! Won't you join us? :P)
