apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Doctor (Hush!))
I've now watched each of the first two episodes of the new season twice. I have Questions and Concerns. I would like to know if other people share my questions and concerns, and if they have any clever speculation they'd like to share as to the answers. Let me know your thoughts! But please: NO SPOILERS FOR UPCOMING EPISODES!

Cut for those who haven't seen the new series yet. )

:D

First, I should announce that there's roughly four hours left to offer a prompt for Spring Into Sherlock over a [livejournal.com profile] sherlockmas. You don't have to plan on taking part in the fest to prompt, and I'd be extra-special-excited to see any of you offer up a suggestion!

Now, down to business: we are throwing a retirement party for my father next weekend. My mother has asked me to handle "the music". She seems to think that people are going to want to dance. I...don't know how I feel about this.

So I turn to you, my dear flist, for help: suggest some music I can play. Keep in mind: the crowd will be composed of an odd mixture of family, my father's co-workers, and friends of my parents, my brother, and myself. (Also keep in mind: though I love them, my friends have No Shame and will not be afraid to Get Freaky in a brightly-lit American Legion Hall filled with pizza, beer, and old people.)

I need songs for: dancing, mingling, and General Party Atmosphere. My mom likes Beyonce; my dad is a fan of The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and Jazz. My brother listens to hardcore rap. I am going to get drunk off my ass and pretend the entire evening isn't happening.

Suggestions?

[livejournal.com profile] evilhippo recommended Josh Ritter's new album So Runs The World Away, and I like it quite a bit. There's this one track, though, called "Lark" that sounds SO MUCH like a Paul Simon track I always have to check my iTunes to make sure I'm still listening to the album. (Oh, and BTW, I just checked the Wikipedia entry for Panel Game and it has not yet reverted back to the original text. I am starting to feel a mite bit guilty!)

Pandora has a new "Indie Rock" station I've been enjoying. It's reminded me of several tracks I used to adore but haven't listened to in recent years. It's also reminded me of my HATRED for certain indie rock darlings, namely Animal Collective and Joanna Newsom. RANDOM SCREECHING SOUNDS ARE NOT MUSIC!

The person who compiled this station also has an unhealthy fixation with Björk. Remember, kids: Björk is fine every once in awhile, but don't overdo it! Moderation is key. Also, be sure to stay hydrated and listen with a buddy.

So what has everyone else been listening to? Any music recs? What were your favorite albums/songs of the year?

I thought it might be helpful to Google "gift ideas for men". I was wrong.

Here are some of the things various websites suggest I buy for my brother:

A flask shaped like a cell phone. A personalized gallon-sized jug of Tobasco sauce. A toaster that imprints the logo of a sports team onto the toast. "Wacky Bathroom Accessories". THE WORLD'S LARGEST GUMMY WORM. Refrigerator magnets. "The Funny Butt/Face Towel." A $5,000 CAMERA. A set of ninja throwing knives. A 25 gallon aquarium coffee table. POOP SOAP. 28 piece bathroom safety kit. "Instant Irish Accent Breath Spray". World's largest crossword puzzle. Personalized Jager Bomb shotglasses. "The wrist cubby". A pillow remote control. DESK-SIZED GUILLOTINE. A custom bobble-head doll of HIMSELF.

Honestly, I think the most insulting articles are the ones that suggest things like: "the Apple iPad!"

OH YEAH! I TOTALLY did not even think of getting him that!!! And I just happen to have this spare $500.00 I found lying in the street today...

*sigh* Socks are good, right?

I am still sick. The cough is a bit better, but still there, and I have a head full of snot and a low-grade fever. I went to the doctor today, though, and I now have anti-biotics and an inhaler. Whee!

Other than coughing and blowing my nose, I will be spending the weekend finishing my research paper on the internet's influence on human sexuality. It's a review of literature, which means I find articles to support my hypothesis and then summarize, analyze, and critique them. Good times.

The professor for the class--doesn't seem to be completely with it, though. The specifications for the paper call for 8-10 articles and a total of 8-10 pages. Now, that isn't a maximum, but still: I have written up two articles so far for a total of 6 PAGES! IN 10 PT. FONT. And I haven't even written an introduction or conclusion for the paper, either.

I honestly can't see how I could whittle it down and still include all of the information she wants. I have no problems with turning in a 20+ page paper; I JUST DON'T WANT TO WRITE IT! I WANT TO LAY ON THE COUCH AND WATCH MY NEW SERIES 5 DOCTOR WHO DVDS! (I also want to whine and stomp my feet like a little child. Pardon me.)

Ugh...I am going to have to find a way to cover these articles in under two pages, or I may not survive the weekend.

First, I have to say that there will always be a place in my heart for ff.net, as it's one of the places where I first discovered fan fiction. There's a still a lot of awesome stuff there; it just can be really hard to find. (I tend to find an author I enjoy, then read all of their stuff and everything they've favorited. That tends to work.)

Anyway. I have an account there, and most of my (non-porn) stories end up there. The thing is, I'm used to posting my Amy/Rory Doctor Who fics, which are posted and then largely ignored. {We won't even go into how cranky I get when my stories that include The Doctor get more hits on AO3 than my (better-written, I think) Amy/Rory fics.}

Sherlock is an entirely different animal.

It hadn't occurred to me to put my first Sherlock fic for [livejournal.com profile] thegameison_sh up there, but when I was archiving my latest entry today I thought, why not? So I put both "Strange Bedfellows" and "Almost Anyone" (formerly called "Of Death and Dying") up yesterday.

"Almost Anyone" got two very lovely, very thoughtful reviews. I was pleasantly surprised, and responded right away to thank them. All good.

"Strange Bedfellows"? I don't know what is going on there. It's gotten about 10 "story alert" subscriptions, and the following reviews:

Cut, because I feel a rant coming on... )

Remember this post, where I promised to write a drabble for the first ten people who commented? Well, I am as good as my word, and they're done! (Incidentally, only three people commented, so if anyone else should want a drabble, feel free to make a request. I won't set the internet police on you if you don't post the meme on your journal in return.)

There's some fanfic "rule" out there that drabbles should be 100 words long. "Phooey!" I say. "I don't play by the rules!" So without further ado:

I've finished my art assignment that's due tonight, so I'm now I can out and play tonight! My friend Katra is having a bonfire at her place, and I'm going to help her make apple streudel. Mmmm.

Last night a friend and I went to see Roseanne Cash (daughter of the late Johnny) perform. If you think you don't like country music, then I suggest giving this lady a try! This is what real country sounds like, not that ridiculous "she thinks my tractor's sexy" BS they pollute the airwaves with.

Afterwards we met up with one of her friends to go out dancing at a club where The Bang (a local DJ) was performing. I've heard a lot of good things about The Bang, but this was my first live experience. Awesome time! Joy Division, LCD Soundsystem, M.I.A., The Clash, Weezer? FUCK YEAH!

More  )

That's enough for today. I'll pick up the Book Meme tomorrow probably. (It's a good thing I'm about two weeks ahead ;)

Oprah's giant head as a cakeSo after rambling about cake over on [livejournal.com profile] ragdoll's journal, I decided that I needed a cake icon. To that end, I did an image search on google for "cake". It was then that I discovered that PEOPLE DO F'ED UP THINGS TO CAKE! (I say "to" cake rather than "with" cake, because I'd rather not implicate cake in these horrible atrocities. I LOVE YOU, CAKE!)

The giant head in the picture is Oprah. (If you don't believe me, read the little nametag.) Who thought this was a good idea?

We shall be asking ourselves that a lot as we explore:

WTF Cakes! )
