apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Monty Python - Help I'm Being Repressed!)
Blatantly stolen from a post on [livejournal.com profile] imaginarycircus's journal:
I get music playing in my head all the time and it's super random. I'm assuming everyone is like this, but I don't actually know that. (...)

What's in rotation on your mental playlist? Do you have one?

Why yes I do! In fact, at work I am known as "the one who sings a lot". (Both jobs. I have a student right now named Maria. Do you know how many songs there are about Marias?!)

I get very many songs stuck in my head on a regular basis, quite often the last one I listened to. But these are the hits that are on frequent rotation:
  • Someone To Watch Over Me (Gershwin)
  • Drop It Like It's Hot (Snoop Dogg)
  • My Country 'Tis of Thee
  • I'm Henery the Eighth, I Am (Herman's Hermits)
  • Cosmic Love (Florence + The Machine. It's currently the song I wake up to.)
  • Why Don't You Do Right? (Original by Kansas Joe McCoy, it's the Carolina Chocolate Drops version in my head.)
  • Paint It Black (The Rolling Stones)
  • Obla-di, Obla-da (The Beatles)
  • Gangsta (Tune-yards)
  • Chances Are (Johnny Mathis)
  • Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen. Someone legit walked in on me belting this out in the bathroom at work last week.)

Those are just sum. (ETA: totally gonna let this typo stand. Math, FTW!) I'll have to try to keep track of how many songs I bust out with during my work day tomorrow.

As for the rest of you: mental playlist? :P

Please enjoy this YouTube video featuring Chances Are as sung by Johnny Mathis, and...a two minute film of a plate of grapes and meatballs. Followed by a slow fade to bags of oranges. And then an unidentified spiky fruit.

WTF? WTF indeed.

Snagging a music meme from [livejournal.com profile] junkshop_disco. The directions make no sense (at least, they didn't to me...), but once you see my list, the procedure is pretty easily grasped.

Open your iTunes (other weird holder of music) and press the corresponding letter into the song name (find a song you love, put it in the post) then the artist (find the band you love, put it in the post) and THERE YOU HAVE IT!

Indeed.

All right folks: it's music chat time!
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (A is for Amy)
Content is content, right?

To play along at home, go into your music library of choice, hit "shuffle", and record the first 20 songs that come up. (Without editing, naturally.)

Starting with the song that was playing when I came across this meme on [livejournal.com profile] usamichan13's journal (because I already had my iTunes on shuffle): Samples from my iTunes, a.k.a. 'The Worst Dance Mix Ever' )
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Gardening - Garden Hoe)
It's seriously about time I spammed you all with vegetable porn. (And it has nothing to do with the fact that I have major re-writes due tomorrow, including an additional sex scene. *ahem*)

OK, now everybody shout: "AMY GTFO LJ, TWITTER, TUMBLR, PINTEREST (ETC.) AND GET BACK TO WORK!!!" :P

(Also: give me your best songs to write porn to. GO!)

So, y'all know how this meme works, right?
Comment on this post with ‘Hit me, Amy, one more time!’ and I’ll give you seven things I want you to talk about. They may make sense or they may be very random. Then post that list to your journal with your commentary. Other people can get lists from you and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

[livejournal.com profile] junkshop_disco gave me these lovely questions to answer:

1. If you could know the time and circumstances of your own demise, would you want to?

2. We are going to a karaoke bar - what will you sing, and how drunk will you need to be?

Ok, so, after completely flaking last week due to making 5 dozen bingo cards, MIXTAPE MONDAY IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER!

This week's theme: Duets.

Better with two... )

Want to play along? You can do so here in the comments, or make a post on your own journal. (Leave me a link so I can find it!) Happy Monday!
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Bad Music (Life's Too Short))
I'm going to see Billy Bragg with [livejournal.com profile] planejane this June! AND HE IS SINGING WOODY GUTHRIE SONGS! *dances* (The "Ain't Nobody That Can Sing Like Me" tour.)

So Monday got away from me, guys: I'm sorry! And now I am stricken with a miserable case of spring allergies and/or The Dreaded Lurgy. (Too soon to tell which!)

I have tomorrow morning off, and OH MY GOD DO I NEED IT! So this Monday's Tuesday's theme is: Music to Chill Out To

Songs to relax to... )

Want to play along? You can do so here in the comments, or make a post on your own journal. (Leave me a link so I can find it!)

Happy Tuesday, everyone. :)

Barely, but yes!

This week's theme: Happy-Making Music! Songs that put a smile on your face, make you bounce up and down, and generally elevate your mood with an efficiency equivalent to chocolate and/or booze.

THE LIST )

As per usual, play along here in the comments, or on your own journal or blog. (Leave me a link so I can read your selections!)

What songs make you happy?
apple_pathways: (Record Shopping)
(Told you I was gonna make a graphic:)

Welcome back to Mixtape Monday! Today's theme: Songs That Remind You When.

Ideally, songs that remind you of your teen years: that time when you were first discovering music for yourself, and believing that the songs were written just for you. (They were. Trust me, they were!)

Of course: for some of you, that was just yesterday. ;) Feel free to pick any songs that remind you of a particular time in your life.

As for me, here's a trip through my musical awakening, starting with: Come back with me, to 1991... )

Annnd that was a little stroll through my very 90s coming-of-age. As always, if you'd like to play along, do so here in the comments or on your own journal or blog. (Do come back here and leave a link, so I can troll through your music choices!)

(And a plug: don't forget to visit the Original Writing Kink Meme! Many great fills there, and many more excellent prompts waiting to be written.)

I have been neglecting the 'ol LJ as of late, so I'm going to be trying a few things to get me posting again. (That is: posting things that are not me complaining about my job.)

The first such project I have dubbed Mixtape Mondays! (Maybe I'll make a graphic for it. I make graphics for everything now...)

Basically, I'll choose a theme, and every Monday post a mix of (5ish?) songs centered around it. If you'd like to play along at home, here in the comments or on your own journal: why, I'd be thrilled.

First theme, selected almost entirely at random: Songs With the Word 'Love' In the Title.

And...GO! )

So...songs you like with the word 'love' in the title?
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Hug)
Oh wow, I missed you all! How is everyone? Any exciting weekend plans?

Nothing much on my part. I've submitted my first original story for publication, so that's out of the way! (I don't have my hopes up for getting published, but it was nice to break the ice, right?)

The rest of this weekend, I need to finish all the music mixes I signed up for, and slap some polish on my [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon entry. (At least it's written! It...doesn't go anywhere...but it's written!)

I've got my two entries for [livejournal.com profile] sherlockmas's Summer of Sherlock done and emailed to Rachel. (I am kind of wondering who the hell I am anymore, finishing all of this stuff ahead of deadlines...I think I have the chatroom to thank!)

So how's tricks? Wanna link me to something fun/funny since I don't have much going on this weekend?

ETA: For interest, and my own reference, here's the prompts I'm working on the for the music mix exchange: Read more... )

Some very good prompts already made over here:

But please click the banner and make some more, because I need more friendly faces to squee with! You're all going to have to hear about my mixes anyway, so why not jump in and prompt/make some yourself!

([livejournal.com profile] evilhippo: There is someone over there using your flash-y Tab icon and making Homestuck prompts. I got so excited when I thought it was you...and then the letdown. :( Boo!)
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Bad Music (Life's Too Short))
This is such a great idea, I am kicking myself for not thinking of it first! I have to ponder out my prompts, but then I am all over this thing!

You make a prompt, someone claims it, and then you get a lovely mix of songs to enjoy! Prompts can be fandom-specific, general, original, a quote, a song, etc... GO AND HAVE FUN!

Today (6.28 for Americans; 28.06 for people who are wrong*... :P) is Tau Day, a day dedicated to Pi's obscure rival: Tau. There are those who argue that π (the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter) is not the best choice as the circle constant, and τ (the ratio of a circle's circumference to its radius) is the better choice. The website I linked to makes a compelling argument: after all, just look at how many times "2π" appears in mathematical formulas.

Anyway, since a circle's radius is half its diameter, τ is always equal to 2π, or approximately 6.283185307179586… Here, snagged from The Nerdist, is a clip of Michael John Blake's musical tribute to Tau: (It's gorgeous!)

(*Kidding! You're not wrong. I agree it makes more logical sense to go Day-Month-Year. But my birthday is 1.23 under the American system, and I am not giving that up. :P)

Since this is a music-related post, I have some questions and observations:

1. I am irrationally annoyed with this singer calling herself Eliza Doolittle. You DO NOT get to call yourself 'Eliza Doolittle', you have a song called "Rollerblades" for Christ's sake! Can we leave the iconic literature/film characters out of it, please?

2. Sondre Lerche, Of Montreal, Wombats, and TV On the Radio all have new albums out. Has anyone heard any of them? Good? Worth buying?

3. I am want to see Fleet Foxes and the Walkmen in September, but I do not want to spend almost $45.00 to sit in the 'upper balcony', TYVM!

4. Still trying to convince my friends to see Foster the People with me next month. $15.00! Such value!

5. Any other new music out there I should be checking out? I CRAVE NEW MUSIC ALL THE TIME.

random images of funny

I've been collecting all sorts of images, gifs, and nonsense oh my desktop lately. In order to finally do something with them and move on with my life, allow me to share the LOLs.

Doctor Who and Nerdy Book Humor )

Ok. Yeah, this post was incredibly long, so sorry for that! Now: off to do something productive-ish.
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Bad Music (Life's Too Short))
The sleep/wake button on my iPod broke on the drive home from work today, which means I have been forced to listen to the radio, and therefore subjected to the WORST SONG I HAVE EVER HEARD in recent memory.

E.T. by Katy Perry.

Pardon my French, but HOLY SHIT is it bad! And the worst part: they play the damn thing every fifteen minutes on damn near every station! This is, I think, the stupidest part (though it's a tough call):

I know a bar out in Mars
Where they driving spaceships instead of cars1
Cop a Prada spacesuit2 about the stars
Getting stupid ass straight out the jar3
Pockets on Shrek4, Rockets on deck
Tell me what's next, alien sex5
I'ma disrobe you, than I'mma probe you6
See I abducted you, so I tell ya what to do
I tell ya what to do, what to do, what to do7

1 Duh...
2 Yes, that's who I want designing my spacesuit: not NASA scientists with their MIT degrees, their knowledge of conditions in a vacuum, their technical know-how--no, I want PRADA! *massive eyeroll*
3 ?
4 ??
5 What about alien foreplay?
6 Oh, fun...
7 Yeah right.

There's also this gem:

You're so supersonic

Yeah, I'm not sure "faster than the speed of sound" is a quality to brag about in a lover...

I could go on, but I'll spare you all the rest of this nonsense. But if you'd care to play along at home, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is this: Name a song even stupider than Kanye and Miss Katy's attempts at Cosmic Love.

Or, you know: just gripe about this song, music in general, or tell me something awesome you're listening to right now that I can add to my iPod after I go to the Apple Store tomorrow and they make it all better!
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Tomatillos + Tomatoes)
I know it's spring and time to move onto spring vegetables, but there were some yummy-looking leeks in the grocery store the other day, and I couldn't resist! So here's a quick recipe:

Leek, New Potato, and Kale Bake

recipe )

Tomorrow, for my friend's graduation BBQ, I'm making an orzo pasta salad with marinated veggies. They had some GORGEOUS-looking eggplants at the grocery store: deep purple, and cream and purple-striped ones. I also bought some zucchini, yellow summer squash, a red bell pepper, cherry tomatoes, and some marinated olives and feta cheese. I think I'm going to add some oregano from the herb garden. What I can't decide is this: should I cook the veggies? How is eggplant raw? My instinct is to roast the veggies, but: before or after I marinate them? Hmm...conundrums.

(Good lord, is this journal boring! If it's not me complaining, it's me wittering on about food! When do I get my Old Lady badge?)

It was a beautiful sunny day, and I spent the afternoon puttering around in the garden. The cat accompanied me, and spent her time pretending to be a street-savvy Wild Animal. She very nearly went after a bumblebee who was working the hyacinths, but wisely decided he was out of her league.

I then went inside, and re-potted some of the seedlings I'd started that were getting too big for the starter trays. Remember the baby pictures I posted of my seedlings? Well, look at my pumpkins now: Trying to save flist space... )

I also have a FANMIX up at [livejournal.com profile] sherlockmas. Check it out, and feel free to point and laugh at my taste in Angsty Chick Music. :P

In conclusion, SPRING IS FINALLY HERE! OMG, LOOK:

Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' 'bout! Happy weekend, everyone. xx :D

And now, to work on the latest Music Battle Challenge from [livejournal.com profile] evilhippo. This one is FIENDISHLY DIFFICULT: I must tell a story through my song choices, without repeating any artists!
