apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Bomb Girls - Betty & Kate)
Dearest author: you have offered, out of the pure goodness of you heart, to write a lovely, femslashy fic for a complete stranger. And you have offered to write in one of my chosen fandoms! Clearly, you are a person of quality and impeccable taste. I'm excited already!

Within, find details of what I like in general, and some ideas of what I'd like to see for specific pairings.

WARNING TO ANYONE NOT CAUGHT UP WITH THE LATEST EPISODES OF DOCTOR WHO, DOWNTON ABBEY, OR BOMB GIRLS: here there be spoilers.

girls who like girls... )
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Doctor Who - Rory & Amy Wedding Dance)
Too many thoughts. This calls for bullet points.

Yep. Spoilers. )

I want to hear ALL THE CRAZY FAN THEORIES about how the Ponds will depart and the rest of the show, provided they are based purely on speculation and NOT AT ALL on spoilers. Please and thank you!

What did everyone think?
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Doctor Who - Canton Everett Delaware III)
I don't know how I manage it, but I tend to steer well clear of the major wank surrounding the Doctor Who fandom without even really trying. Sure, I come across people who didn't like a particular episode, character, or plot point, but largely, it's just your general "talking about a show I like" kind of critical analysis.

What I do come across, though, is the aftermath: basically the sane, rational Who fans of my flist and the comms I frequent alluding to major unrest in the camps. Most recently: some fans being so enraged with recent episodes, they felt justified in sending threats and copious vitriol in the direction of Stephen Moffat's Twitter account, and to any friend who had the audicity to defend him. (Including, I have heard, to Caitlyn Blackwood, the 12 year-old child actress who plays the young Amy Pond? Please tell me this isn't true. I do not want to believe that cretins who find it appropriate to harrass a child have come within a million miles of my beloved fandom!)

The thing is, I'm not really sure what everybody's enraged about, or what the nature of the abusive comments that allegedly caused Moffat to leave Twitter were about. I'm curious, so if anyone with a strong stomach could link me to some of the discussion dealing with the whole debacle, or point in the right direction, I'd be appreciative.

(Please note: no, it's not that I didn't see anything wrong with the show's attempts to portray 'strong' women, queer characters, people of color, motherhood, or committed relationships. I did. It's also not that I don't find these issues worth discussing or think they shouldn't be called out when they occur. I do! In fact, I get very angry when fans are quick to shout, "If you don't like the show why do you keep watching it??" when other fans try to point out these issues, because you can both like a show and recognize its problems, and being a fan of Doctor Who doesn't mean I have to abdicate my critical faculties and just accept whatever sexist/racist/homophobic/whatever tripe that it shoves in my face.

What it comes down to is this (and these are my personal feelings, and not my prescription for how others should behave or feel): while I don't like everything about this show, I love a lot of it. Nothing that's portrayed on the show is any worse than the crap I have to put up with in my daily life. I'm going to stop here before I say something along the lines of "it doesn't bother me, so it shouldn't bother you", but I will note that while it does bother me, it doesn't often get in the way of my enjoyment.

This is the bit that I am directing at everyone else: threats and harrassment are not OK. The end.)

ETA: When looking for an explanation for the major unrest in the Doctor Who fandom, I thought, "Wait, I know a place I used to frequent that often discusses the more unsavory side of the fandom: [livejournal.com profile] who_anon! It was there, I came across this thread, which seems to contradict a lot of the accounts I've read about the whole affair. (I shouldn't be surprised to learn that there are two sides to every story.)

It seems fans are/still were being unpleasant, but in ways that are generally more socially acceptable. (Or at least, if not socially acceptable, then certainly less criminal.) The harrassment may not be on the level some have reported, and there is no mention of threats.

As always, anything heard through the fandom grapevine should be taken with a grain of salt.

MORE UPDATES:
Here is one account from Tumblr that claims the person who harrassed Caitlin Blackwood was a single individual, of her own age, who apparently took a stage class with her. I don't know how accurate that information is.
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Doctor Who - Sexy Karen)
It's been AGES since I've written any fanfic, but here's one I put together for [livejournal.com profile] eleventy_kink:

Title: More Than a Kissogram (Parts 1 & 2)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Explicit sex; infidelity(ish). (Amy doesn't consider it infidelity, and neither do I, but...well, most people will.)
Characters/Pairings: Amy, Rory, Eleven, Original Female Character, Original Male Character; Amy/Rory, Amy/OFC, Amy/OMC
Part 1 ("The Confession") summary: There's something Amy never told Rory about her job: that if the price was right, she was more than just a Kissogram. After they marry, there comes a time when she has to confess.
Part 2 ("The Resolution") summary: "For as long as you want me, I am yours, but you have to remember: I am mine, too."
Story based on this prompt: There was something Amy never told Rory about her time as a Kissagram. She never told him the if the price was right she was more then willing to perform certain other 'services' for her customers, men and woman alike.

(If you prefer, this story can also be read at AO3.)

This episode brought to you by Happiness and Confusion. Allow me to sort out which is which:

Happiness: It's back! It's back! Yaaaay!!!

Confusion: I probably shouldn't have gotten drunk watching Downton Abbey before sitting down to this ep. I have a feeling I missed a lot of Obvious.

Happiness: It's Amy! And she's super-hot as ever!!!

Confusion: Ok, wait, so she's like a model now??? I thought she was a perfum entrepreneur or whatever. I don't...

What do you mean you don't have a husband?!?! /rude

Happiness: It's RORY!!!

Confusion: Wait, you're just gonna hand her the divorce papers? Just like that? You waited 2,000 years for her and you're going to give her up just like that?!

Amy, are you going to stand for this???

AND THAT WAS JUST THE FIRST TWO MINUTES.

Other points: (In no particular order)
  • Wait, why did the Daleks want to blow up the Asylum? Because of Carmen? What?
  • For that matter, why do they think the Doctor is going to do it when it means his imminent death? (This is the point where I start regretting all the gin I drank before watching this.)
  • IT'S JENNA! YAY, JENNA JENNA JENNA! Holy COW, do I love her a lot already! Setting my phasers to "girl-crush", immediately. I am so glad I managed to avoid any spoilers giving away her presence in this episode.
  • I was super disappointed when the black guy turned out to be dead/a Dalek. Who knew Doctor Who was also subject to the laws of horror movies?
  • Wait, did I miss the part where Amy loses her flashy bracelet?
  • These Daleks don't really seem more 'insane' than the other ones, to be honest...
  • Love that when Amy comes to, the first person she thinks about is Rory. (I am SO NOT a shipper for anyone other than these two. I am more invested in the fictional relationship of these two characters that I have ever been in any of my own real life relationships, and I am...not even exaggerating about that. :P)
  • OSWYN! I like that name. Let her be Osywyn!
  • Amy hallucinating the Daleks as people. I...wait, what? /don'tdrinkandWho
  • OMG, AMY, QUIT PRETENDING LIKE YOU DON'T EVEN LOVE HIM ANYMORE!
  • I am alternately pissed off that having children has been painted as the be-all/end-all of a relationship, and disappointed that we won't be seeing any Pondlings. I WANT TO HAVE MY CAKE AND EAT IT TOO, OK??? /feminism,howdoesitwork?
  • OF COURSE Amy is the one that kicked Rory out, DUH!
  • So sweet, the scene where Rory says (as we've all been thinking) that their relationship has always been about him loving her more than she loves him, and her slapping him and pointing out that waiting for 2,000 years is nothing compared to having to give him up. ♥

(Although: not so happy about all the slapping. Can we have Amy stop hitting Rory, please? First all of the "Ha ha, Amy beats up Rory!" jokes from A God Complex, and now the slapping. ENOUGH!)
  • So it turns out Amy and Rory's impending divorce was due to a romance novel-type "misunderstanding", where if they'd just sat down and had a simple conversation, none of this would have happened. Awesome.
  • (I was not opposed to the "kiss and make up" bit, however.)
  • WAIT, HAVE I MENTIONED THAT JENNA'S CHARACTER IS DEFINITELY PROBABLY QUEER, YET? NO??? Well it's very exciting. Others have interpreted the "just a phase" line to mean her fancying boys, and I am totally on board with that. /queeruntilprovenotherwise
  • Oswyn's a Dalek? :(
  • And now the Daleks can't remember the Doctor? That's some crazy shit. Who are the Daleks without their hatred for the Doctor?
  • Amy: "I can see you!" /hee!

Ok: so that's what I noticed, minus everything I forgot in my tipsy, absent-minded state.

What did I forget? What did I miss? WHO'S READY FOR DINOSAURS? \0/

apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Doctor Who - He's Mister Cool)
So, everybody remember how I started a comm called [livejournal.com profile] who_bop to feature Who works with bisexual/pansexual characters?

Yep, that's still going on.

I've compiled a list of works that fit our guidelines! Please share with anyone who might be interested. ALSO, please share with me any works you know of that fit the bill! There has to be more out there, right?

BOP FICS!
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Doctor Who - River Surprised!)
So, since discovering that I could potentially fly to Los Angeles without selling a kidney (or any other major organ), I cannot shake the idea of heading out to attend Gallifrey One next February. (Arthur "MOTHERFUCKING" Darvill is going to be there. And the voice of the Daleks. And Madame Vastra and Jenny. And and...)

So: is this a terrible idea? And what/who should I dress up as?

apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Doctor Who - Rory - BAMF of Leadworth)
I've got a new comm, guys. (I know, I know: but it's a Doctor Who comm, and I've always wanted to have one of those!)

It's called [livejournal.com profile] who_bop; the "BOP" stands for bisexual, omnisexual, pansexual. In the discussion on my last post with [livejournal.com profile] rachel2205, I was reminded of how much I love bisexual characters in fic. There's just not enough of it. (In any fandom, really: but I'm only up to tackling one at a time, I think!)

So come one, Whovians: who's interested in such a project? Have a look around, tell me what you think. Join the damn thing and make me feel better about wasting all the time I did setting it up. ;)

And if you're feeling especially generous, help me spread the word by displaying my banner:

[livejournal.com profile] who_bop: bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual. Click to visit!

Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] venivincere, pretty much immediately. (Fic and stats? Oh, be still my heart! ♥)

Top 10 By Hit Count: )

Top 10 By Kudos: )

It's nice to see that "Two Rivers" topped the kudos list, as it's definitely one of my favorite pieces of fic I've ever written--probably that one, and "Almost Anyone" are, I think, my best works.

Other works I am really fond/proud of but which failed to chart are a lot of my Amy/Rory stories. In particular, I really like Where Two Paths Cross and I Thought of You. (I also really like The Woman She'll Turn Out To Be, but it's kidfic, and I am forever alone in my love of kidfic. :P) These probably didn't make the list because of the relative un-popularity of Amy/Rory. (Any Doctor Who fic I write that includes the Doctor, even in a cameo role, automatically gets twice the hits. Le sigh.)

Also interesting to note: my most popular fic on LJ is, by far, Lightning Fast, and it has yet to receive a single kudos on AO3! Who'da thunk?

{Also, it occured to me while compiling this list: I have written many, many fills for [livejournal.com profile] eleventy_kink, and have made a grand total of three prompts. (Two of them just the other night when I was tipsy and in need of a social outlet.) Someone, somewhere, owes me fic!}

These videos are awesome.

And I wanted to embed the "Doctor Who RPG" video, but I LJ does not play nice with the embed codes of most sites. BOO! So here's the link: http://www.collegehumor.com/video/6749695/dr-who-rpg .

Enjoy!

SO CUTE! So I made her some icons, from this Radio Times photoshoot.

And a few random fairy tale icons I forgot I made:

As always, snag and use if you're so inclined, I am not picky about crediting, and concrit is more than welcome.
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Doctor Who - Amy/Rory - Kissing it Bette)
Title: A Pond Family Christmas
Rating: G
Characters/Pairing: Amy/Rory, River/Eleven, Pondlings (OCs)
Summary: All Amy really wants is a Christmas with her entire family.

Author's Notes: This was written for [livejournal.com profile] dwsanta, for [livejournal.com profile] lavendergaia who wanted "ALL the domesticity for Amy and Rory"! There are kids in it, so technically that makes it kid!fic. It's been kind of a kid!fic Christmas for me. :P

It's the best time of night... )
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Doctor Who - Pheasant Sweater - Never Fo)
I finished the fic! This means I can get back to writing what I was supposed to be writing, right? Right...

Title: Learn to Dance the Macarena
Characters/Pairing: Amy, Rory; Amy/Rory
Rating: PG
Word Count: 3,000

Summary: A simple dance, but difficult to master.

I made dill pickles today:

I also started the process of making bread and butter pickles. (They have to brine in salt and ice for 8 hours.)

And now, onto Who News. (Cut for those who don't care. Read more... )

Also: the magic chemical combination for instant happiness? Is apparently tea and chocolate.
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Amy VOV)
Title: "Lightning Fast"
Rating: PG
Length: ~1,300 words
Characters: Amy, River, Eleven
Notes: This fic was written with the assumption that Rory is the "good man" that River kills. Please God Moff don't let it be true!

Written for the Guns and Curls Ficathon at [livejournal.com profile] spoiler_song. Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] mewiet's prompt: Eleven/River - Amy meets her grandchild.

(I feel I should mention: tone is sad-ish. So if you don't like sad...yeah.)

apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Amy + Rory)
Title: "The Woman She'll Turn Out To Be"
Rating: G
Length: ~2,000 words
Characters: Rory, Amy, Melody
Notes: It's kid!fic. So...yeah. :P
Summary: When you know your daughter's going to turn out to be River Song anyway, does it really matter if she cleans her teeth or not?

This was written for [livejournal.com profile] spoiler_song's "Guns & Curls" ficathon for [livejournal.com profile] winninghearts's prompt: "Amy + Rory + Melody. The older she gets, the more they see the River Song they knew in her."

'cause a Doctor Who party don't stop. (It just takes a f*ing hiatus after seven episodes for NO GOOD REASON. :P)

So, I want to hang out on the internets and flail about the mid-series finale of Doctor Who, but social obligations dictate I must leave the house. (Why must people inconveniently schedule their grad school celebration parties on the days of epic Who episodes???)

SPOILERY SPOILERS for 'A Good Man Goes to War' )

Ok, I gotta go: please leave me some squee and/or griping and/or thinky thoughts! I will be spending the evening with people who've never even heard of Doctor Who, and it's inevitable that I am going to get a bit tipsy, forget this fact, and then spend a good 20 minutes trying to explain the show to people who COULD NOT CARE LESS and/or are just humoring me.

Go! :P
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Amy + Rory)
There was no way I was going to wait another week to see The Almost People. If you are (or have to!) then do avoid this post, as it contains SPOILERS.

OH EM GEE! )

SO: If you've seen the ep, please do some speculating with me in the comments! (Just NO SPOILERS please! Only pure speculation based on the episodes! I came across what I consider to be a pretty damn big spoiler courtesy of Google news the other day, and I was Not Happy.)
apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Doctor (Hush!))
I've now watched each of the first two episodes of the new season twice. I have Questions and Concerns. I would like to know if other people share my questions and concerns, and if they have any clever speculation they'd like to share as to the answers. Let me know your thoughts! But please: NO SPOILERS FOR UPCOMING EPISODES!

Cut for those who haven't seen the new series yet. )
