apple_pathways: Whatever floats your boat! (Default)
I made this for [ profile] pulped_fictions, for Heptathlon event "Hit the Target." The challenge was to take a moitvational quote/slogan and make a poster for it.

I am less happy with the burlap stars on it, but overall, I like how my experiment with different fabric textures and clip art worked out.

"Hit the Target" is one of the challenges I'm responsible for running during Pulpympics, so I'm the one who chose the list of motivational slogans. It was a challenge to find a batch of twelve that didn't make me want to roll my eyes and vomit. You see, I can be a sentimental sap, but it better be good sentiment! None of this: "Shoot for the moon! If you miss, you might land on a star" bullshit. First of all, as a metaphor, it sucks: there are no stars between the earth the moon. Second: what kind of advice is that?! This is the kind of BS American Idol wannabes have tattooed on their asses. People who dream big with no realistic goals or expectations.

Anywhere, where was I? Rambling. Yes.

So, "take your dreams seriously" has been an important motto of mine in recent years. Not because I think I'll "land on a star" and fall into a bit of luck. But because if I want to live my dreams, I have to stop thinking of them as "dreams" and start treating them as "goals". (Maybe I should flock this post so I can protect my copyright and turn that thought into some kind of seminar...)

Anyway. That's what I'm up to these days: working towards my dreams.

Here are the other twelve quotes I came up with for the challenge. I like some more than others, but I find each inspiring and not at all vomit-inducing. So: enjoy!

1. If you're going through hell, keep going. - Winston Churchill
2. Motivation comes from within.
3. Keep away from those who try to belittle your ambitions. - Mark Twain
4. Take your dreams seriously.
5. If it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you.
6. Be curious, not judgmental. - Walt Whitman
7. The question isn't who is going to let me; it's who is going to stop me. - Ayn Rand
8. You are confined only by the walls you build yourself.
9. Why fit in when you were born to stand out? - Dr. Seuss
10. A goal without a plan is just a wish. - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
11. I don't know the way, but I'll be there soon.
12. Don't quit. Suffer now, and live the rest of your life as a champion. - Muhammed Ali

(I especially like the Ayn Rand quote, though I can't stand the woman's fiction. And the one by Muhammed Ali, because it very much fits in with my "you have to suffer for your art" outlook on life.

And the full Mark Twain quote, which I also love, is this: “Keep away from those who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you believe that you, too, can become great.”
